Cape Grace, A Fairmont Managed Hotel, has announced the expansion of its already imposing African art collection through a new collaboration with the Norval Foundation. This partnership expands on the hotel’s commitment to create an innovative and comprehensive collection that reflects the richness of contemporary South African art. Here’s everything to know about the new pieces.

The new pieces at the Cape Grace Hotel
New to Cape Grace’s art collection are captivating works by the acclaimed Nicholas Hlobo, Dada Khanyisa, and Zanele Muholi. Hlobo’s intricately woven pieces explore identity and cultural heritage with poetic depth, while Khanyisa’s bold, vivid compositions fuse the past and present, sparking critical conversations about race and modern society. Meanwhile, Muholi’s striking visual narratives powerfully challenge conventions around gender and sexuality, giving the collection profound emotional resonance.
These exceptional works, on extended loan from Norval Foundation, enrich an already impressive permanent collection featuring celebrated artists such as Maja Marx, Lulama Wolf, Galia Gluckman, Tafadzwa Tega, Nabeeha Mohamed, and Teresa Kutala Firmino, among others.
Curator Lezanne van Heerden shares: “I wanted to showcase the rich diversity of African art forms and introduce pieces that are truly one-of-a-kind – crafted in an array of materials. The goal was to create a visual dialogue, a kind of textured layering that invites guests to slow down, look deeper, and really feel the presence of each work.”
