On the 19th of September, 196 Victoria Road honours the arrival of spring with a communal celebration experienced through the sights and sounds of art and music. It’s no secret that art and music are traditionally welcomed as features in celebrations – marking milestones and commemorating special events. The same can be true for the changing of the seasons. Set at a time close to the spring equinox, enjoy characteristic themes of renewal, life and warmth with a group collaboration showcasing both the musical, and the visual.
At no cost, absorb the event’s springtime philosophy of “Fine art enriching space, music enriching time”. This space bursts with life: in colourful pigments, and jazzy sounds.
‘Music enriching time’: Live performance by Giuliette Price and Khaya Mthembu-Salter
This dynamic vocal and guitar jazz duo breathe new life into traditional jazz styles in over a year of creating music together. Joburg-born Giulette Price has been performing her original music at well-known (and well-loved) Cape Town festivals and events for over three years, while simultaneously working toward a degree in Jazz Voice from UCT’s South African College of Music. Watch Price perform live alongside Khaya Mthembu-Salter: fellow student of Jazz studies at UCT, and active member of Cape Town’s jazz scene.
Keeping to the theme of spring, mark the new season of new life watching the duo’s energetic interpretation of jazz classics and traditional styles. This live show takes place the evening of the 19th of September.
‘Fine art enriching space’: 196 Victoria Road boasts two group exhibitions on display
The venue hosts a vast selection of artworks split into two sections. The first section features a curated collection of works showcasing the works of five South African artists: Tiffany Onderstall, Danielle Jordaan, Lisa-Marie Myburgh, Kate Scharf and Dayna-Gay Tate.
Tiffany Onderstall is a Cape-Town based oil painter and printmaker. The award-winning artist believes that art can be much more than just an aesthetic to please the observer. She believes it can lead the viewer down an exciting new train of unexplored thought.
Danielle Jordaan is a Capetonian currently residing in the countryside of the Eastern Cape. Apart from her love for oil paintings depicting everyday scenes, she is also the owner of “Danielle Jordaan Studio”, which represents multiple talented South African artists as an agency and events company. She is a Loerie Award finalist, a member of Design Indaba’s Emerging Creatives Class of 2020 and is part of 2021’s top 250 finalists for the Rust-en-Vrede Portrait Award.
Lisa-Marie Myburgh is a mostly self-taught artist: she seeks to expand her frontiers on art and culture by exploring different mediums and alternative thought processes. She has always loved drawing and sees this as her first and introductory love to art. Her mediums consist of pencil, oil painting, printmaking, stop-motion, progressive literature studies and participation in anything that advances imaginative speculation.
Dayna-Gay Tate’s artistic and photographic practice is largely an enquiry into colour, light and form. Her works are primarily paintings, but also finds great delight in discovering bridges between different disciplines. These include drawing, design, textiles, illustration, photography and poetry. Her works circle around themes of nature, home, light, and time while often engaging her faith, vulnerability, and love for storytelling.
Kate Scharf is known for her organic, plant-inspired paintings and drawings, influenced by her love of nature and peaceful surroundings. Her ‘foliagescapes’ reflect her fascination with botanical art while also functioning as an expression of the uplifting, calming, and reassuring qualities inherent within nature. By utilising soothing colours and constructing harmonious, balanced compositions, her artworks aim to invite the viewer inward into a mindset of quiet contemplation.
The second group show section features submitted works by participants from Cape Town Life Drawing sessions. These artworks range from life drawings brought to life in class, to oil paintings that were created beyond walls of the classroom. See the talents and skills developed through this local art education programme.
