Mandela Day with Ladles of Love

Mandela Day is on the horizon, meaning that South Africans are once again encouraged to spend (at least) 67 minutes of their day helping out those less fortunate. In Cape Town, everyone can join one of four activities at the DHL Stadium that can directly contribute to these groups. Each activation zone is clearly labelled, making it easy to decide between them. There are various time slots open at each Activation Zone, making it easier for everyone to find time in the day to help out.

There are two events on Mandela Day: in the city, everyone is encouraged to bring along clothes, blankets, and non-perishable goods for their winter warmer drive. The second is a beach cleanup, guided by the rhythmic grooves in the headphones, from Kommetjie to Noordhoek Beach for a 5km walk to restore the peninsula’s coastline to its natural state.

Something Rotten!

Something Rotten! is a Broadway musical comedy with a book by screenwriters Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell, and music and lyrics by Grammy Award-winning songwriter Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick. The show opened on Broadway in 2015 and ran for over 700 performances, earning 10 Tony Award nominations and taking home Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Christian Borle’s performance as William Shakespeare.

Set in 1590s London, the story follows brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom, two struggling playwrights who are unable to compete with Shakespeare’s cultural dominance. Desperate for a breakthrough, Nick consults a soothsayer who predicts that the future of theatre lies in a new form in which actors sing, dance and act simultaneously. The brothers set about creating the world’s first musical, with comic consequences.

The show is structured as a broad theatrical satire, drawing on the conventions of Renaissance drama and the 20th-century American musical tradition simultaneously. It includes large-scale song-and-dance numbers, including tap sequences, and features a cast of exaggerated comic characters. The production runs 120 minutes, including an interval, and carries a PG age restriction.

To celebrate the cold-weather season in Cape Town, ROOI is serving up an exclusive experience that continues its tradition of using local ingredients and sustainably sourced seafood. The four-course event starts with a creamy cauliflower soup garnished with toasted granola and parmesan, before moving on to a creative rooikrans-charred butternut barley with pickled butternut and smoked duck breast.

For the main course, guests can choose among three options, catering to meat-lovers, vegans, and pescatarians. The big attraction is a prime rump steak, cooked on a premium Josper grill, fennel-spiced grilled kingklip, or a gourmet charred cabbage dish featuring white bean purée, toasted cashews, harissa dressing, and roasted grape salsa.

Finally, dessert is a sticky date, pecan, and walnut crumble with vanilla bean ice cream and chilli toffee sauce, finishing the night off on a warm, nutty note – a suitable ending for a winter dinner experience.
