The Keyhole is Kalk Bay’s brand new concept cocktail bar and lounge. For those not in the know, the term ‘speakeasy’ first came to prominence back in the 20s and 30s prohibition era in America, when the ban on alcohol first came into effect.
In The Keyhole’s case, the bar is tucked inside the beautiful Sonnekus Beach House and transports visitors to a different era altogether with private society club vibes.
The secret spot boasts a sophisticated retro feel in mind with moody dimmed lighting, rich velvet furnishings, and an air of subtle mystery of a bygone era. Think statement furniture pieces and leather accents, hanging antique lighting, and of course, top-notch liquor.
A playful scavenger hunt for grown-ups
Entry to the bar is only granted on a self-guided scavenger hunt that makes for a fantastic activity to do with friends, family, colleagues, or even on a first date. Find one of the ten hidden keys waiting to be discovered around the venue.
Keys are hidden away in unexpected spots at the venue, perhaps behind a bookshelf or inside a vintage suitcase. Further clues can be found on their Instagram page. Once you’ve found a key, present this to one of the bar’s Key Masters and they’ll hand you a menu that unlocks the door to your table.
Food and drink
For table service, there’s a great selection of delicious food on offer at The Keyhole too, you can dive into light meals like patatas bravas, pesto gnocchi, or pizza with a number of toppings to choose from.
On the drinks end of things, the menu reflects a mix of signature cocktails, spirits, wine, and some of the best local and international gins.
Membership options
For the most loyal of visitors, The Keyhole has a membership programme that involves surprise offers, exclusive events, personalised service from the team of mixologists and Key Masters, and other VIP benefits. Guests who find a key once can keep it and become a Key Custodian and have the option to join the membership.
