Sonnekus by Ideas Cartel: Seaside Chic at This Sunny Escape in St James

If you’ve ever dreamt of actually staying over in one of the quaint fishing villages on the False Bay strip, you’ll love Sonnekus Beach House in St James, less than 40 minutes from the CBD.

Ideas Cartel, a proudly Cape Town developer famous for their coworking spaces and boutique hotels, revamped and launched Sonnekus in late 2022.

They’ve kept the same signature standards – tasteful interiors, top-notch service, and carefully considered add-ons to guarantee a memorable stay.

Chic stay options with a jet-setting edge

This dog-friendly hotel in Cape Town is a gracious manor house built around 1926 term and perfectly defines the slow living that St James and neighbouring villages have become renowned for.

Inside are ten spacious and beautifully restored bedrooms to create an idyllic nautical retreat with authentic architecture as well as great sea and mountain views. The team ditched trendy colours and interior details for a balance between what’s traditional and modern. Think neutrals in different tones, French doors that open to the wild Indian Ocean lapping very closeby, open brick fireplace to cosy up during cold nights, and other thoughtfully curated corners to lose yourself.

Easy, breezy all-day cafe

Breakfast is not included in the accommodation, but the hotel is home to a friendly resting eatery with all the ingredients of a stellar cafe. Coffee is always on point, the staff is on the ball, and, but there’s a delicious menu with all-day brunch faves, gourmet sarmies, and light lunches.

When: Daily, from 8am to 5pm. Book via email or Dineplan

Things to do

Sonnekus is located right on Main Road and within walking distance from both Kalk Bay and Muizenberg. The villages are usually buzzing with foot traffic during the day, and take on a much quieter and romantic atmosphere after sunset. A range of restaurants, quickie concept stores selling fashion, art and home interiors, and small galleries can be found in Kalk Bay. Be sure to take a stroll to Kalk Bay Harbour.

If you want to take it easy, try the coastal walking path with breaking waves that run from Muizenberg to Kalk Bay.

Keen hikers will love the Echo Valley hiking route. The trail is moderately challenging and offers stunning views of False Bay from atop. Leashed dogs are welcome to join.
