Spier Wine Farm, set in the heart of the Stellenbosch Winelands, has always been genuinely invested in showcasing South Africa’s art and cultural heritage. The 6th annual Spier Light Art showcase explores bigger and bolder themes than before, such as environment, technology, and identity – while captivating audiences through wonder and play.
The event is family-friendly and provides a truly unique way to experience the farm after dark.
Spier Light Art: When the Sun goes Down, the Lights go Up
Since 2018, Spier’s unique art exhibition has provided a platform for local artists to share their work with a rarely used medium, and shine a light on humanity and philosophies. This year’s instalment of Spier Light Art is no different and features highly acclaimed artists including Abri de Swardt, Naadira Patel, Sarah de Villiers, Stevie Thompson and Alan Alborough.
Here, guests are invited to go on a nocturnal adventure in the gardens with experimental and interactive light, sound, and video artworks from both local and international artists.
Curators Vaughn Sadie and Jay Pather return for the art event in Stellenbosch and promise visitors to the farm yet another bold, bright and beautiful art experience.
The curators say: ‘These works combine wonder, participation and thought. This exhibition of Light Art is a space for celebration, offering moments of escape and fantasy, and moments when we may touch sides with the world outside, lest indeed, we fall completely asleep.
While battling the irony of hosting a light art festival during load-shedding, luminescent installations beg interactions and conversations with their viewers.
Book a Guided Tour of Spier Light Art
For a deeper understanding of the exhibition, guests can book a guided tour through the enthralling art-filled gardens. Tours take place every Tuesday and Thursday from 7.30pm to 9pm. The tour is free, but space is limited, so book now.
