Dive into the world of linocut printmaking with Lino Eatery, a fun and informal beginner’s lino printing class in Cape Town. Learn the whole process from design, carving, inking and printing your very own artwork from scratch. The pop-up workshops are hosted on various dates in locations across Cape Town.
What is Lino printing all about?
Lino printing has been used in printmaking for over 100 years and the technique was originally developed for making wallpaper. This popular craft burst into popularity in the early 20th century as a printmaking technique. A design generally is cut and carved into a sheet of linoleum, this stamp is then inked and pressed onto the fabric to create a stark pattern.
What’s included in Lino Eatery’s Lino printing classes in Cape Town?
In this pop-up workshop, Lino Eatery founder Tarryn Robinson teaches all you need to know to make your first linocut and go home with a limited edition print of your design.
The class offers a range of modern designs and templates to choose from, but if you have a particular idea for the image in mind, take it along and see if it will work. Your design could be a logo, pattern, words or a hand drawing.
Whether you are a complete beginner or have some experience with printmaking, Lino Eatery’s sessions are a great opportunity to learn and explore this exciting medium in a relaxed atmosphere. You will have the chance to experiment with different tools and techniques, and you will be able to ask questions and receive feedback from your instructor as you work.
This guided craft class in Cape Town follows designing and drawing your image, tips on how to transfer it to a lino sheet, and the best methods for proper carving or etching to make a long-lasting and bold artwork. It’s also strangely satisfying to slice and cleave at a supple block of lino, creating a mirror image of your final design.
