In Residence by Zarah Cassim at the President Hotel
In collaboration with Art School Africa, the President Hotel in Bantry Bay is opening a brand-new art exhibition by local painter Zarah Cassim. The works, displayed in the halls and on the walls of the luxury accommodation, use oil paint to explore colour, form, movement, and more.
A graduate of UCT’s Michaelis School of Fine Art, Cassim has exhibited her work across the country and internationally, including in Spain, France, and Australia. The pieces in the hotel’s In Residence series explore how places remain in our memory as details begin to fade. As such, the landscapes are elusive and uncertain, resembling only the idea of a particular space or subject.
The statement piece is The Dance I, a sprawling work that uses shades of red, purple, and yellow to convey this feeling of abstract space. In Residence also features smaller works by Cassim, including Sherbet, Berry and Bleed, ranging from paint on canvas to Fabriano paper, showing her artistic progression.
Cassim’s exhibition is the latest edition of In Residence, a joint venture between the President Hotel and creative non-profit Art School Africa. The series brings art out of galleries and museums into more everyday spaces, making it more accessible and connecting artists with new audiences they may not have reached before.

Celestial Bodies
After a 2025 world premiere and sold-out April performances, Joburg Ballet’s Celestial Bodies comes to Cape Town for the first time. Combining ballet, cinematic projections, scientific storytelling, and live piano, this grand spectacle explores cosmic energy and movement through the art of dance.
Presented in partnership with Universe on Stage (headed by physicist Dr Luca Pontiggia and composer-actuary Yasheen Modi) and choreographed by Joburg Ballet’s Naledi Award winner Mario Gaglione, Celestial Bodies grew out of Gaglione’s fascination with a cinematic stage experience about the extraordinary reality of black holes.
“I remember walking up to Luca and Yasheen after watching the Universe on Stage’s production of Hidden Giants and saying that I longed to see their vision manifest through dance; that their world of music, science and art was already moving like choreography waiting to be embodied,” says Gaglione.
The production mixes live narration by Pontiggia (who holds a PhD in theoretical physics), an original live piano score by Modi, and a dynamic, universal performance from Joburg Ballet’s star dancers. The story builds the audience’s curiosity with space, stars, and galaxies, and reflects the connection between our daily lives and the ever-expanding world around us.

French Institute: We Are What Remains
Opening at !Khwa ttu San Culture & Education Centre in Yzerfontein, audiences can now experience an immersive, mixed-medium art installation created by San artists. Titled We Are What Remains, the exhibition combines projected imagery, animation, spatial audio and sculptural elements that engage with the histories, memories, and cosmologies of !Xun and Khwe, two of South Africa’s most storied indigenous communities.
At the heart of the exhibition is a collection of linocut prints made by carving designs into linoleum and transferring them onto paper, created by !Xun and Khwe artists during the 1990s and 2000s. The artworks emerged from a little-known chapter in Southern African history.
In 1993, an arts project initiated by Catharina Scheepers provided a space for !Xun and Khwe men and women living in Schmidtsdrift to create linocut prints. Working in makeshift spaces, the artists produced images reflecting experiences of war, displacement, community and longing for home. Each developed an individual style, with many drawing inspiration from rock art. Today, !Khwa ttu holds 600 original linocuts from the project, preserving an important visual record of the communities’ histories and cultural knowledge.
Developed by Open Draft, a South African creative company specialising in cultural curation and immersive design, in collaboration with !Khwa ttu and seven of the original artists, We Are What Remains combines the original linocuts with immersive digital art technologies. Light brings the linocut figures to life, with animations unfolding across surfaces and optical illusions that make the images seem suspended in space.
Cost: R130 per person (entry to the museum). Learn more via the website.
When: Exhibition on show 31 October 2026 – October 2027 | Monday – Sunday | 9am – 5pm

Roméo et Juliette
Cape Town Opera presents Roméo et Juliette at Artscape: the tragic tale of star-crossed lovers has inspired countless works of literature and art across cultures, becoming an archetype of love and fate. Shakespeare’s version remains the most familiar, and for his ninth opera, French composer Charles Gounod found the perfect dramatic vehicle.
Gounod, one of the most influential French composers of the late nineteenth century, is celebrated for his lyrical charm, refined orchestration, and elegant taste. Yet it is his mastery of theatrical storytelling – setting scenes, building tension, and guiding the drama to its tragic conclusion – that makes Roméo et Juliette especially unforgettable.
Cost: R170 – R720. Bookings are available via Webtickets.
When: 18 – 29 November 2026 | From 7pm | From 2pm (weekend matinee)
Where: Artscape Theatre Centre, D.F. Malan St, Foreshore

Leon Bridges
The acclaimed American singer-songwriter helping redefine the modern R&B landscape, Leon Bridges, is bringing his talents to South Africa for the first time, performing at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens in late November.
Rising to fame after his 2015 album Coming Home brought back the ultra-retro stylings of mid-century soul music, Bridges became known for hits like River, showcasing his sultry voice and appreciation for stripped-back, 1960s instrumentals.
He made his biggest songs, July and Texas Sun, alongside fellow artists Noah Cyrus and Khruangbin (respectively). Both showed his versatility as a singer, with folksy ballads that have over 300 million streams on Spotify. These influences played a major role in his latest album, Leon, which uses country instrumentation to tell a personal, reflective narrative about his upbringing in Fort Worth, Texas.
The Kirstenbosch performance comes just two months after the release of Happiness Anytime, Leon Bridges’ latest outing, which brings elements of Jamaican dancehall to a new project that gets audiences off their seats and on to their feet. Leon Bridges produced it himself alongside J Lloyd-Watson and Lydia Kitto of the British funk hitmaker group Jungle.
