‘Nothing Comes without its World’ is Cloudigital Art’s first exhibition that brings art, technology and philanthropy together while opening an inclusive conversation around ocean conservation in South Africa. The selection of works on show includes wall art, sculptural works, and video installations that not only captivate and inspire but also drive change by honing in on the beauty and vulnerability of our marine environments.
A call to action for ocean conservation
The group art exhibition in Cape Town confronts controversies surrounding conservation and its impact on land, access, and inclusion/exclusion in South Africa and beyond. At the same time, it celebrates the inherent care that does take place in conservation activities. By expanding beyond traditional narratives of heroism of “the conservationist” and the “charismatic species” as isolated individuals, we remember that “nothing comes without its world”; and that turtles are part of a much bigger and more complex story of kinship and multi-species ethics that is still growing.
Curator and contributing artist Dr Dylan McGarry explains the inspiration behind Nothing Comes without its World: “What I aimed to explore in this exhibition as a curator is to collaborate and engage with and re-imagine the human/justice shapes of the big questions about conservation, and to do this with other animals, and other ways of knowing and being. To explore care, multi-species ethics and seeing justice as an ongoing iterative project, that includes conservation care workers as much as it includes sociologists, activists and scholar-activists.”
Nothing Comes without its World featured artists
This unique project not only platform exceptional artists, but also activists, academics and ocean-fluent people such as Shamier Magmoet, Sujay Sanan, Traci Kwaai, Aaniyah Martin, Cleo Droomer, Tanya Poole, and many others who push for incredible change and awareness through their work.
The driving force for this collective is to expand our understanding of conservation, from its conflation and entanglements with colonialism to contemporary inclusive ocean-care practices emerging from the humanities and Indigenous communities.
Proceeds from the exhibition will go towards the first-of-its-kind, state-of-the-art Marine Wildlife Hospital and other ocean care initiatives. The project is a creative collaboration with the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation and the V&A Waterfront,
