Those who prefer a laid-back celebration of South African culture are invited to join the Community Braai at Century City. SAFRA Heritage Gala

The inaugural SAFRA Heritage Gala, presented by the South African Free Reed Association, is a Heritage Day concert celebrating the accordion, concertina, and harmonica traditions of Southern Africa.

The programme marks a host of centenary milestones: the first boeremusiek recordings of the 1920s, the birth year of legendary accordionist Nico Carstens (1926–2016), composer of the internationally recorded “Zambezi” and more than 2,000 songs across South African musical traditions, and the founding of the Kruger National Park in 1926. The gala also marks 40 years of the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre, established in 1986.

The performance draws together leading South African free reed musicians, including accordionists, concertina players, and harmonica artists across traditional, world music, and classical idioms. Featured performers include Carl Julius, Desmond Goliath, Hano Krige, and Leon Oosthuizen, among many others. Alongside the musical performances, there will be dance contributions from ballet, Scottish country dancing, tango, and volkspele.

VUUR x Cape Grace: Terroir & Table

Once a month, Cape Grace hosts a winemaker’s dinner at Heirloom, the hotel’s fine-dining establishment. Lamb Champs

The Boland edition of Lamb Champs brings together 100 of South Africa’s sheep farmers for a full-day Heritage Day festival centred on spit-roasted lamb, held at Hoër Landbouskool Boland in one of the region’s established agricultural settings. Tickets include access to lamb tastings served from the competing spits throughout the day, while stock lasts.

Beyond the tastings, the day features live performances from Henru & Schwabie, Heuwels Fantasties, Robbie Wessels and Francois van Coke, alongside a Toyota Urban Trax activation, a Sheep Head Eating Competition and a Wool Carry Competition. Foreshore Heritage Walking Tour

Renowned storyteller Cameron Peters leads participants on a journey through the iconic locations and unique history of Cape Town’s 19th-century shoreline for Heritage Day weekend.

Kicking off the spring season of tours, guests are guided through what once were bustling fish markets, Apartheid-era mausoleums, dockside brothels and pubs, and busy cinemas, and have become part of the city. No Place Like Home

An original Cape Town musical brings a local cast and live band to Artscape for a story built around family, identity and the pull of home. No Place Like Home follows characters whose lives intersect across the city’s neighbourhoods, using humour and music to explore what connects people to place.

The production is framed around the idea that every family carries its own story and every community its own rhythm, tracing how these threads meet unexpectedly over the course of the show. Rather than centring on a single narrative arc, the musical moves between characters and settings distinctly rooted in Cape Town, giving the show a local, conversational texture rather than a generic musical-theatre framing.

The production runs for six nights with a mix of evening and matinee performances, including two shows on both Saturday and Sunday.

Cape Flats City Walk

Part of the Cape Flats Art Festival that celebrates the people of one of Cape Town’s biggest areas while advocating for social change for its most vulnerable residents, the City Walk is a guided heritage experience that tells the story of the people, places, and moments that have made the Mother City what it is today.

The walk takes participants through some of the city’s most iconic locations while telling the story of some of its most impactful events, with everyone encouraged to ask questions and share their own perspectives on Cape Town and its people.

Aquarium After Dark: The Dirty Skirts & Lost//Youth

The final of the three After Dark concerts showcases up-and-coming duo Lost//Youth alongside scene veterans The Dirty Skirts.

Lost//Youth are the most eclectic of all the After Dark-featured artists, pairing an alt-rock guitarist with an ethereal folk singer. The result is a unique musical experience, with their 2026 single, howl, mixing indie guitar riffs with spoken-word poetry into a track that’s difficult to comprehend and even more difficult to put down.

After being forced to cancel their show last year, they’re back. The Dirty Skirts are no mystery to Cape Town’s indie-rock fans, best known during their run between 2004 and 2012. Their career highlights include being nominated for Best Rock Album at the SAMAs for their album Daddy Don’t Disco (2008) and winning Best Alternative Album at the SAMAs (2011) for their album Lost in the Fall.

WOMAD Kidz 4 Kulture

Celebrating the diversity of world music, art, and dance, WOMAD brings a lineup of global sounds, performers, and culture to the V&A. Mojo Heritage Day Street Fest

Mojo Market is shutting down Regent Road in Sea Point for an all-day Heritage Day celebration, complete with live performances indoors and out, street food stalls, bars and non-stop music.

The musical lineup features a range of emerging and established stars in Cape Town across a variety of genres, including Bongeziwe Mabandla, Jack Parow, Dwson, Kujenga, and Mila Smith.

Exhibit #1 by Langa Ensemble

The newly formed vocal group from one of Cape Town’s biggest suburbs, Langa Ensemble, is performing their debut on the eve of Heritage Day, bringing traditional South African rhythms and blending them with new, experimental sounds. The show also explores a search for cultural identity, community, and finding purpose.

District & Surfa Rosa present Heritage Day

The East City comes alive at night in honour of Heritage Day, as Surfa Rosa take over District with screeching guitars, loud amps, and a hyped crowd that’s ready to celebrate rock, punk, and everything in between. The night features an extensive live music lineup and a couple of DJs to keep things moving. No theme, no gimmicks, just a rocking night out.

The show is headlined by the Afrikaans alternative rock band Karel Bester & Die Kraaines Band, with their frontman known for his hit single Sal Jy Saam My Kom Drink. They are supported by the femme two-piece Elephants Can Remember, post-punk outfit Measurehead, indie-punk trio Cistamatic, and Surfa Rosa DJs The Kwagga and Disco Darko.

Zeitz MOCAA

The largest contemporary museum of African art and one of Cape Town’s premier art destinations, Zeitz MOCAA, features both permanent and temporary, rotating exhibitions, all contributing to the preservation and promotion of African artists.

Velvet Feathers

Cape Town City Ballet presents a special one-weekend show at the Norval Foundation. Inspired by iconic numbers from Swan Lake and other beloved ballet classics, Velvet Feathers brings some of the company’s most talented dancers to perform captivating sequences from across the ballet canon.

The show starts with Swan Lake’s iconic second act, featuring the defining white tutus and Queen Odette’s captivating transformation, before diving further into famous ballet pieces, with the exact lineup remaining a mystery to audiences – making it an engaging performance for ballet enthusiasts to recognise each dance number throughout the production.

UCT Jazz Festival

The South African College of Music’s annual jazz showcase returns to the Baxter Concert Hall for three evening concerts, alongside free lunchtime performances at the W.H. Bell Music Library modelled on NPR’s Tiny Desk format.

The festival opens on 21 September with the UCT Jazz Vocal Showcase, curated by Nomfundo Xaluva-Dyantyis and Abigail Houghton and featuring the UCT Jazz Voices under the direction of Amy Campbell. The following night, 22 September, the UCT Big Band performs under Justin Bellairs, moving through South African jazz, Latin rhythms and contemporary swing as part of the university’s Heritage Day programming.

The festival closes on 23 September with a Heritage Day concert showcasing new work from the Creative Collab Project, an interdisciplinary initiative launched in 2024 that brings together the Jazz and African Music sections of the college for joint composition and performance.

Cape Town Photography Festival

Cape Town becomes a city-wide gallery as the Cape Town Photo Festival is underway with a vibrant, thought-provoking programme that celebrates photography in all its forms. After a successful launch last year, the month-long event returns with work from 149 photographers from South Africa and around the world.

From groundbreaking photography exhibitions and artist talks to hands-on workshops, music performances, and panel discussions, the festival brings together acclaimed international names, celebrated local voices, and rising talent to explore the art, craft, and future of photography.

Many historically and culturally significant exhibitions are available for viewing on Heritage Day, including Foundations of Freedom by Patrick de Mervelec, Jansje Wissema’s District Six: People Lived Here, Cape Rhythm: Goema, Klopse & Memory curated by Heidi Erdmann, and group exhibition Metaphorical Biographies.

Museums to Visit: District Six Museum

This iconic cultural hub of learning in Cape Town is home to the memories and histories of forced removals under the Apartheid regime in South Africa. Festival of Comedy

South Africa’s most iconic comedian, Trevor Noah, is teaming up with the Bafunny Bafunny squad for the debut edition of the South African Festival of Comedy. Billed as a national tour with numerous shows in some of the country’s biggest arenas, viewers can expect a festival that positions stand-up comedy with the same energy, pride and collective spirit typically reserved for big sporting events.

At the centre of South Africa’s Festival of Comedy is Trevor Noah, stepping in as Lead Curator and Captain of the SA National Team of Comedy (or Bafunny Bafunny). He is joined by Vice Captain Eugene “Today is Tuesday” Khoza, a 15-year veteran of the local and international comedy scene, to lead the fully South African team of up-and-coming and established comics who are performing at this inaugural festival.
