Cape Town City Ballet: Orpheus in the Underworld

Step into the dazzling world of Orpheus in the Underworld, a ballet bursting with wit, glamour, and irresistible charm! Loosely inspired by Jacques Offenbach’s comic operetta, this 1920s set production features flapper girls, Mafia henchmen, Can-Can dancers, and even a penthouse swimming pool for the Gods. The show features music specially arranged by Michael Tuffin.

With choreography by Veronica Paeper, and original designs by Peter Cazalet, this ballet is a riotous romp through love, mischief, and divine chaos.

When Eurydice runs off with Pluto, Orpheus is thrilled, but meddling gods and a nightclub underworld ensure hilarity and spectacle. A timeless crowd-pleaser, this production promises pure entertainment and unforgettable fun!

Constellations

The 2026 season of How Now Brown Cow kicks off with Constellations, directed by acclaimed industry veteran and choreographer Jay Pather. The play, which premiered at the Royal Court Theatre before moving to the West End, follows a physicist and a beekeeper in a relationship that evolves, twists, and rewrites itself before the audience’s eyes.

This mind-bending, reality-altering play was originally written by Nick Payne, who has received Olivier and Tony Award nominations for his work and wrote the A24 romance film We Live In Time.

In this production, Marianne is played by Mwenya Kabwe, an award-winning Zambian-born performer known for her roles in Doubt and mAnJE! MaNje. Mark Elderkin plays Roland, himself a renowned actor who has starred in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Amadeus, as well as in various film and TV roles.

Theatre lovers looking for something that pushes the art form and plays with expectations can look to Constellations, which uses the language of quantum physics to tell a simple story about the complexity of love, for a unique and moving experience.

Killer Queen: LAMTA Dance Production

LAMTA’s annual dance productions have become a regular feature on the local performance calendar, with previous productions including Come TogetherHollywoodVintage Jukebox, and Beyond: A Cirque Fantasy drawing strong audience attendance.

This year’s production, Killer Queen, pays tribute to the British rock band Queen through a dance-focused interpretation of the group’s music and stage legacy. Inspired by frontman Freddie Mercury and the band’s rise to international success, the production examines the story of four musicians who became one of the most influential acts in popular music.

Cape Town City Ballet: Centre Stage

20 different dance training institutions, including Cape Town’s tertiary performing arts training institutions, come together to present a performance piece to celebrate the joy of dance to raise funds for the Cape Town City Ballet.

Over 300 young dancers-in-training and full-time students aged 5 – 25 will present 20 pieces of choreography, ranging from classical ballet to jazz, musical theatre, and African contemporary dance. These young dancers come together to honour the Cape Town City Ballet’s past and present, and to dance into its future, with the joy this company has given so many audiences for so many years.

Guest performers include dancers from the Cape Town City Ballet and students from Cape Town’s tertiary training institutions. Presented with love by each performer, the funds raised will go directly to the Cape Town City Ballet to support its sustainability.

Broadway to Blockbuster

Broadway to Blockbuster is a two-concert programme presented by the Philharmonia Choir of Cape Town at Cape Town City Hall in June 2026. The concerts are conducted by Richard Cock, former Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra of South Africa and Artistic Director of the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra, widely recognised as one of South Africa’s most experienced orchestral conductors. He is joined by South African tenor Jonathan Roxmouth, who has performed the title role in The Phantom of the Opera both in South Africa and internationally, and whose repertoire spans opera, musical theatre and concert performance.

The programme moves between Broadway and film, encompassing numbers from The Sound of MusicMy Fair LadyLes MisérablesWest Side Story, and The Phantom of the Opera, alongside popular music and cinema orchestrations including Bohemian Rhapsody and Ennio Morricone’s score from The Mission. The Philharmonia Orchestra accompanies the choir throughout and performs orchestral suites from the film scores of John Williams (Star Wars), Hans Zimmer (Pirates of the Caribbean), and music from Superman and The Lord of the Rings.

Puss In Boots

Written and directed by Steven Stead, this family pantomime is presented by KickstArt Theatre, a Durban-based non-profit company with over 170 local and national awards and a two-decade track record of large-scale productions at major South African venues. The production follows last year’s warmly received Jack and the Beanstalk at the same venue, continuing KickstArt’s annual tradition of holiday-season pantomimes.

Set on a Caribbean island, the story centres on a quick-witted cat armed with a clever plan and a pair of boots, navigating magical twists and comic misadventure to alter his owner’s fortunes. The cast includes Rory Booth in the title role, Belinda Henwood as good fairy Calypso Honeybunch, Bryan Hiles as the villainous Grimsby Withergood, and Kyran Brady Taylor as Tom Marzipan.

A Little Night Music

New directions follow in winter with Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music at Theatre on the Bay. Set in Sweden in 1900 and inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s film Smiles of a Summer Night, the musical uses the waltz as its heartbeat as romance unravels over a single midsummer weekend. With sophistication, wit, and emotional finesse, and featuring the beloved song Send in the Clowns, the production offers a sparkling contrast to the season’s operatic intensity.

Vincent

Vincent – His Quest To Love And Be Loved, a three-time Naledi Award-winning musical theatre production, returns to play in front of many Western Cape communities this July, following its sold-out 2025 debut in London’s West End.

Through reimagined renditions of classic pop, rock, jazz, and musical theatre hits, the production follows Van Gogh’s turbulent story, with Anderson bringing the iconic artist’s ever-relatable struggles, successes, and unending passion to life. Styled as a “multimedia musical cabaret”, the performance delves into Van Gogh’s lifelong need to create, love, and be loved on an emotional journey that connects modern audiences with the complex man.

The Curious Case of Katherine Sinclair

The Curious Case of Katherine Sinclair is a cabaret framed as a murder mystery led by the victim herself. The production combines elements of jukebox musical theatre, comedy, and investigative drama in a genre-blending stage format.

Set in a status-conscious urban world shaped by image and reputation, the story follows the disappearance of socialite Katherine Sinclair after her murder. With no body recovered, a cast of suspects, including her husband, closest confidants, former lovers, and an eccentric detective, attempt to reconstruct the events surrounding her death.

Viewers are taken across the Marigold Bridge with Miguel from Disney●Pixar’s Coco to experience the film’s vibrant spirit realm, as skeletons dance atop swaying poles over the audience. Cape Town’s Most Wanted is a showcase of street dance returning for its 15th production, bringing together the city’s leading street dancers, choreographers and dance crews in a single performance.

The show draws performers from across Cape Town and beyond, presenting multiple street dance styles and genres on one stage. Rather than a competition, the production is framed as a co-creation, with the broader Cape Town dance community collaborating to present collective work. The result is a programme that spans a wide range of street dance styles, from breaking and popping to waacking and beyond, reflecting the diversity and depth of Cape Town’s street dance scene.

Prima Facie

How Now Brown Cow presents the South African premiere of Suzie Miller’s award-winning Prima Facie, directed by celebrated theatre maker Neil Coppen, whose previous credits include Isidlamlilo/The Fire Eater, Animal Farm and Tin Bucket Drum.

The production is a one-woman performance that tackles gender-based violence and the challenges survivors face as they navigate the justice system. Danica De La Rey Jones, known for Hunting Jessica Brok, Unseen and For Colored Girls, performs the role of Tessa, a brilliant young barrister who climbs her way up from working-class origins to the top of her profession. Tessa believes in the legal system until a brutal attack turns her world upside down, forcing her to navigate the same system she once championed.
