In a historic first in nearly 30 years, Cape Town City Ballet and Joburg Ballet are teaming up to present the iconic Swan Lake. First opening in Johannesburg, the production visits Cape Town from 25 to 27 July 2025.
With showstopping choreography, lavish costumes, and Tchaikovsky’s unforgettable score, this powerhouse collaboration promises a ballet experience like no other. Here’s everything you need to know.

All About Swan Lake
Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake is one of the most classic ballet performances of all time, first premiering in 1877. The story follows Prince Siegfried, who on his 21st birthday is reminded that he must choose a bride. Disheartened, he wanders to a mystical lake, where fate introduces him to Princess Odette, trapped as a swan by the wicked sorcerer, Von Rothbart. Their love could break the spell, but a cruel deception shatters their dream.
At the grand royal ball, Siegfried falls for Von Rothbart’s trick, believing he has found Odette. Realising his mistake too late, he races to the lake to beg for forgiveness. As the storm rages, love prevails, and Odette is restored.
The story of Swan Lake is one of enchantment and romance, and has mesmerised audiences with its themes of love and destiny for decades.
Through this generational collaboration, the Cape Town City Ballet and the Joburg Ballet are bringing Tchaikovsky’s iconic ballet to South Africa.
