This June, The Philharmonia Choir of Cape Town is performing some of Hollywood’s hottest scores and Broadway’s most beloved ballads. Broadway to Blockbuster is an exclusive two-concert programme scheduled to take place at Cape Town City Hall, with some of South Africa’s premier talents headlining the show.
Programme
The concerts are conducted by Richard Cock, former Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra of South Africa and Artistic Director of the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra. He is widely recognised as one of South Africa’s most experienced orchestral conductors, having been labelled the country’s first “professional countertenor”.
He is joined by South African actor and singer Jonathan Roxmouth, whose repertoire spans opera, musical theatre and concert performance. The tenor has performed the title role in The Phantom of the Opera both locally and internationally, and also played Billy Flynn in multiple productions of Chicago and Che in Evita.
The programme moves between Broadway and film, encompassing high-drama numbers from fan favourites like The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, Les Misérables, West Side Story, and The Phantom of the Opera. There are also popular music and cinema orchestrations on the night, including Bohemian Rhapsody, ABBA’s Money, Money, Money, and Ennio Morricone’s score from The Mission to keep the audience on their toes.
The Philharmonia Orchestra accompanies the choir throughout and performs sweeping orchestral suites from the film scores of John Williams (Star Wars), Hans Zimmer (Pirates of the Caribbean), and music from Superman and The Lord of the Rings – bringing some of the most iconic soundtracks to ever grace the big screen right into the heart of Cape Town.
