The African Climate Alliance is hosting the 2024 edition of the Cape Town Climate Concert on Saturday, 1 June, an afternoon of celebration that brings awareness to the Climate Crisis and drives authentic inclusivity in the city.
This special performance opens Youth Month while uniting all Capetonians in a call for systemic change concerning climate change and related social injustices. The event will feature several powerful local music bands and a chance to learn more about the good work the organisation is doing (and how to get involved). Food and drink vendors will be on standby to round out a relaxed and informative afternoon. Here’s what you can look forward to:
Confirmed bands in the lineup
Kujenga
This energetic afro-jazz act from the Mother City has been wowing audiences prolifically in the last year or so, combining different genres from the African diaspora, with Black improvisational music at the heart. ‘Kujenga’ means ‘to build’ in Swahili, symbolising the musicians’ aim to create meaningful experiences for every listener. Last year they released a single named ‘Hymn for Hani’, honouring activist Chris Hani 30 years after his assassination, to much acclaim.
Soundz of the South
Soundz of the South is an anarchist collective working to build an international working-class counter-culture that is anti-authoritarian, anti-capitalist, anti-racist, and anti-sexist. The collective convenes spaces where class consciousness, unity, and solidarity amongst activists are built, using hip-hop as the frame for engagement. The band has performed at numerous festivals all over the world.
Soulitude and Friends
Monwabisi ‘Soulitude’ Dasi is a cultural activist who focuses on creating and communicating his mission and purpose on earth. He has a passion for visual art, music and collaboration. He brings with him Mariana Del Carmen (vocals), Grant Van Rooyen (bass), William Jacobs Jr (piano), Bonolo Nkoane (drums) and RubyGold (vocals). Coming together from across the South Peninsula of Cape Town, they present a rich combination of jazz, funk, storytelling, rhythm, soul and poetry in three languages (English, Isixhosa and Afrikaans).
Nikita Adams (performing with Ethan Adams as Ethnik)
This dynamic brother-and-sister duo blends soulful vocals with intricate guitar melodies. With a diverse repertoire spanning pop, rock, gospel, jazz, and folk, Ethnik presents a unique musical experience. Their repertoire includes South African tunes by Judith Sepuma and Mafikizolo, and global favourites. The duo has performed at several notable events including the International Jazz Festival Free Concert and the Expresso Morning Show.
