Shade, the Johannesburg-based waste materials library and youth arts platform, brings its imaginative, intergenerational, and community-rooted practice to Cape Town with SEE SAW, a week-long pop-up programme at One Park. Running from 12–17 December, SEE SAW presents a curated collision of art, sound, food, film and play, recasting Shade’s Johannesburg archive for new audiences in the Cape. Here’s everything you need to know.

SEE SAW: A Retrospective in Motion
SEE SAW gathers performances, artworks, films, and “art-in-works” from across Shade’s network of artists and dreamers. Throughout the week, One Park becomes a site of encounters.
This dynamic constellation of practices that unfold across One Park, are re-curated artworks and reprinted ephemera that chart the shifting material narratives in urban culture. Across these encounters, youth artworks from Johannesburg’s inner city are placed in dialogue with emerging and established artists, highlighting Shade’s commitment to social collaging, intergenerational collaboration and the imaginative possibilities of shared worldbuilding.
Throughout the week, music performances, film screenings and a concept dinner will reshape the atmosphere with compositions that invite dancing, drifting and moments of collective reverie. Drawing from Shade’s extensive documentation archive, remixing years of community projects, parades, youth programmes and material experiments into new visual montages.
See Saw is Shade’s invitation to look again – at material, memory, and the worlds we build together through play.
