Join Cape Town’s Creative Conversation with the Norval Exchange’s Women in Art Panel & Discussion

A brand-new initiative at the Norval Foundation, the Norval Exchange brings together artists, writers, filmmakers, curators, cultural thinkers, and creatives of all kinds to discuss and engage with contemporary African art.

The bi-monthly public programme takes place in one of Norval’s acclaimed exhibitions, with a new theme and topic of conversation at each edition.

Women in Art

For the inaugural Norval Exchange event, held during national Women’s Month, Norval Foundation is honouring those whose work often goes unnoticed. Women in Art: Voices, Visibility & Creative Futures celebrates women in the arts through personal stories and cultural insight, while tackling the issues and challenges that continue to plague female creatives in the industry, and looking toward the future.

The event takes place in Portia Zvavahera’s Tanda rima exhibition, roughly translated from Shona as “Chase away the darkness”. Rooted in the language in which the artist lives, thinks and dreams, the exhibition reflects an intimate and vulnerable narrative shaped by themes of motherhood, care, spirituality and transition.

As with each Norval Exchange on the events calendar, the evening features a host of acclaimed and award-winning artists and creatives from a range of fields. Joining the conversation are ArtThrob’s editor, writer, and photographer Nkgopoleng Moloi; visual artist Lena Sulik; gallery manager Uvile-Ovayo Kweyama; and Goodman Gallery director Jacqui Peffers. Norval’s Museum Curator, Carmen Joubert, moderates the conversation.
