Who is Eckhart Tolle?
Eckhart Tolle was born in Lünen, Germany, into a relatively ordinary family. He described his childhood as unremarkable, marked by a sense of unease and unhappiness. However, his early years were also characterised by a deep curiosity about the nature of existence and the human condition. This curiosity would eventually lead him on a path to a profound spiritual awakening.
In his early twenties, Tolle experienced a life-changing spiritual transformation that would shape the rest of his life. One night, while in the depths of despair and contemplating suicide, he had a moment of epiphany. He realised that he could no longer live with the constant stream of negative thoughts and emotions that dominated his existence. At that moment, he had a profound realization that he was not the incessant chatter of his mind but something more profound.
After this awakening, Tolle embarked on a journey of self-discovery and spiritual exploration. He studied a wide range of spiritual traditions and philosophies, including Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, and various forms of Western spirituality. He also spent time as a homeless wanderer, experiencing life without the confines of societal roles and attachments.
An accomplished mindfulness author
Eckhart gained worldwide exposure after Oprah Winfrey recommended his first book, the #1 New York Times bestseller ‘The Power of Now’, in O Magazine in 2000. Five years later, Oprah described the author’s follow-up ‘A New Earth’ as one of the most transformative books she’s ever read and the work was selected for Oprah’s Book Club. Both books have since gone on to become international bestsellers and have been translated into 52 languages. Both books bring important awareness around Tolle’s philosophy of living life in the present to millions of readers globally and are widely regarded as two of the most influential spiritual books of our time.
Eckhart and Oprah have subsequently collaborated on the chart-topping Essential Teachings podcast on Apple and Spotify to connect his work with a wider audience.
The cultural impact of Eckhart Tolle
Eckhart Tolle participated as a key speaker at the Dalai Lama’s Peace Summit and spoke alongside best-selling author Deepak Chopra. He has been internationally lauded as ‘The most popular spiritual author in the United States’ by The New York Times.
Aside from his lengthy collaboration with Oprah Winfrey and famous interview with Gwyneth Paltrow for GOOP, Eckhart’s influence continues to grow in various spheres of popular culture. His teachings feature throughout US rapper Kendrick Lamar’s 2022 album Mr Morale & the Big Steppers as well as a narration by Tolle.
