AAFRICAA & Wiid Design Unveil Ambitious Ceramic Collection Collaboration

Contemporary African design emporium AAFRICAA present a fresh collection of sculptural and functional works, created alongside Laurie Wiid van Heerden of Wiid Design. Titled Field Notes: Nature Recast, this brand-new body of work, made with ceramics, cork, and glass, launches at AAFRICAA from Friday, 30 October.

Here’s everything African design enthusiasts need to know.

More about Wiid Design

Renowned designer Laurie Wiid van Heerden channels his childhood fascination with the natural world into Field Notes, most notably with 24 ceramic reliefs, each depicting a different species. From birds and mammals to reptiles and insects, the collection captures some of South Africa’s most notable flora and fauna, including the secretary bird, the Cape dwarf chameleon, and the disa flower.

Other products include a series of ceramic masks, each with distinct glazes and carved details, that incorporate South African nature accents, including three larger Mask Sculptures with unique botanical references. Finally, the series features many vases, boxes, and containers inspired by natural wonders like the hawksbill turtle shell, each bringing its own colourful identity to the collection.

Developed in Wiid Design’s Cape Town studio, Field Notes: Nature Recast brings a personal fascination with local biodiversity to AAFRICAA’s careful curation of African craftsmanship.
