Jazzart Dance Theatre is once again giving talented artists a platform to bring their stories to Cape Town audiences, with Our Bodies Remember premiering this spring.
The show, featuring new works from members of Jazzart’s Artistic Residency programme, explores the question: what do our bodies remember, and what happens when we wake up to who we really are?

The first performance, Ancient Souls, choreographed by Lihle Mfene, constructs a reality where people gather in the afterlife to unpack identity and life itself.
“Ancient Souls journeys beyond the boundaries of a single lifetime, imagining a timeless realm where souls gather between lives to reflect, heal and encounter the lessons of human existence. Through memories, emotions and fragments of lives, the work explores what we carry with us and what it means to rediscover who we are.“
The second part of the double bill is Chesney Stanfield’s Unveil, a deeply reflective piece about awakening, created with Jazzart alumnus Emile Petersen. Together, the duo form the performance group Gain Collective, which performs shows across the country.
“The work explores moving through life in a state of inertia, beneath a metaphorical veil. Through moments of revelation and confrontation, the dancers question what has become familiar, what remains hidden and what it takes to awaken.”
Our Bodies Remember is the latest product of Jazzart’s residency programme, which connects dance artists with new audiences, gives them the opportunity to work with professional dancers, and helps them find their own voice in contemporary dance.
