Grammy Award-Winner Leon Bridges Is Coming To Kirstenbosch

The acclaimed American singer-songwriter helping redefine the modern R&B landscape, Leon Bridges, is bringing his talents to South Africa for the first time, performing at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens in late November.

Rising to fame after his 2015 album Coming Home brought back the ultra-retro stylings of mid-century soul music, Bridges became known for hits like River, showcasing his sultry voice and appreciation for stripped-back, 1960s instrumentals.

He continued to experiment with later iterations of 80s neo-soul on Good Thing and 90s R&B with Gold-Diggers Sound, tracing his musical influences to their roots while giving his own spin on each genre. During this time, tracks like the glittery romance of Beyond and the infectious rhythms of Motorbike continued to cement his place as one of R&B’s most exciting voices. After several nominations over the years, his 2018 song Bet Ain’t Worth The Hand finally earned him a Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance.

He made his biggest songs, July and Texas Sun, alongside fellow artists Noah Cyrus and Khruangbin (respectively). Both showed his versatility as a singer, with folksy ballads that have over 300 million streams on Spotify. These influences played a major role in his latest album, Leon, which uses country instrumentation to tell a personal, reflective narrative about his upbringing in Fort Worth, Texas.

The Kirstenbosch performance comes just two months after the release of Happiness Anytime, Leon Bridges’ latest outing, which brings elements of Jamaican dancehall to a new project that gets audiences off their seats and on to their feet. Leon Bridges produced it himself alongside J Lloyd-Watson and Lydia Kitto of the British funk hitmaker group Jungle.

The show opens with SAMA-winning singer, songwriter, and composer Msaki.
