What is Red Bull BC One

Every year, thousands of breakers compete in Red Bull competitions worldwide. The format features head-to-head breaking battles in which contestants are judged on style, originality, musicality, and technical prowess as they showcase a mix of creativity and athleticism.

The top B-boy and B-girl on the evening go on to represent South Africa at the World Final in Toronto, Canada. Established in 2004, Red Bull BC One is a 16-person knockout tournament with competitors from around the world. No South African has won the big trophy, with Moroccan dancer Lil Zoo the only African winner so far. Breakers at the Cape Town tournament are looking to change that by beating out their local opponents and showing the world what Mzansi’s breakers have to offer.

Originally created by Puerto Ricans and African-Americans in the Bronx, breakdancing has become a global phenomenon, rising in popularity alongside its musical counterparts, hip-hop and funk. The street-dance sport involves intricate hand and footwork, often set to fast-paced drum breaks, and skilled breakers need a high degree of coordination, fitness, and body control. Recently, the sport achieved further recognition following its inclusion in the 2024 Olympics.

For years, it has been a prominent aspect of South African hip hop culture, with acclaimed B-boys and girls including three-time champion Courtnaé Paul, Curse, and last year’s champion Toufeeq. In the lead-up to the national final, some BC One all-stars are joining the tour to host some community jams and even teach workshops. More information is available on the website.
