The Cape Town City Ballet is bringing the iconic comic ballet Coppelia to the Cape Town stage this October, promising a delightful mix of comedy, romance and a touch of mystery, all wrapped up in dazzling costumes and sets. The story is a whimsical fairytale about young love, a curious inventor, and a life-like doll that causes quite a stir. Here’s everything you need to know.

An Enchanting Story of Love and Dance
With its charming and mischievous plot, dazzling costumes, and glorious music, Coppelia offers a magical experience for audiences of all ages. This timeless ballet blends humour, romance, and a touch of mystery, making it just as delightful for families and first-time ballet-goers as it is for dance enthusiasts.
The fairytale follows the story of Franz, a spirited young man, and his clever fiancée, Swanilda, whose curiosity leads them into the workshop of Dr. Coppelius. Here, among shelves of curious creations, they discover Coppelia, a beautiful, life-like doll who seems almost human. As mistaken identities, playful trickery, and heartfelt moments unfold, true love ultimately triumphs in a joyful and heartwarming finale.
Every performance of this comic masterpiece is brought to life with musical arrangements performed by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, whose live accompaniment adds depth, energy, and vibrancy to the story. Combined with expressive choreography and a kaleidoscope of colour, Coppelia is an unforgettable celebration of the magic of dance.
