A Quiet Triumph: Bascule Bar This Cape Winter

Cape winter rewards those who know where to linger, as softer light and cooler evenings pull everyone indoors. Bascule Bar at Cape Grace, a Fairmont Managed Hotel, is set on the edge of the V&A Waterfront marina, promising a cosy evening for everyone joining for a quick drink or a laid-back evening. This much-loved whisky and cocktail bar welcomes all who gather – long-standing friends, first-time visitors, families, those celebrating, or simply those who feel inclined.

Step inside and the chill begins to lift. Deep leather sofas, polished wooden tables, and softly lit corners create a setting few are in a hurry to leave. Cosy nooks invite lingering conversation over an Old Fashioned, while the long bar offers a more sociable setting. Throughout, a thoughtfully curated collection of African art lends Bascule a distinct sense of place, anchoring its sophistication firmly in the Cape.

Service, as ever, is attentive without being intrusive. The team are knowledgeable, gracious, and genuinely pleased to share what they know. That spirit is felt most keenly at the whisky bar, where a remarkable collection of six hundred labels awaits discovery – from Scotland’s storied distilleries to small-batch American bourbons and rarer finds beyond. Guests may order a single dram or settle in for a tutored flight led by our experts who speak to the craft and history behind each pour.

Tastings are offered daily, alongside a menu rooted in local flavour.

Weekends from 5pm to 7pm are dedicated to live music, with a rotating lineup of jazz bands and soloists that reflects Cape Town’s enduring love of the genre.

Father’s Day Special

To celebrate the dads across Cape Town, Bascule Bar and Cape Grace are hosting a “Gentleman’s Recovery Ritual”. The experience combines a premium wellness treatment with a luxury tasting experience for the ultimate restoration retreat.

To start, guests receive a 60-minute back, neck, shoulder, and scalp massage from Fairmont’s professional masseuses, while they are simultaneously treated to compression boot therapy, which reduces muscle soreness, promotes blood circulation, and restores lightness to the body.

This restorative ritual is followed by a curated whiskey tasting, where fathers can celebrate their hard work by savouring some of Bascule Bar’s most sought-after malts. Finally, guests receive a luxury Muscle Release Gel that cools and soothes muscle pain, helping them return home rested and refreshed.

Cost: R1830 per gentleman. To book, guests should contact the hotel via [email protected] or 021 410 7069.
