The largest contemporary museum of African art and one of Cape Town’s premier art destinations, Zeitz MOCAA is celebrating South African Heritage Day with an all-inclusive, interactive event that’s completely free to attend.
From creative workshops to guided tours and an authentic food market powered by Makers Landing, here’s everything that Zeitz MOCAA is hosting on the upcoming public holiday.

More about Zeitz’s Heritage Day celebrations
Two sets of guided tours run throughout the day. Art enthusiasts get to explore the Museum’s many galleries and exhibitions alongside experts who tell the important stories behind each work, theme, and artist on show. This includes some of the most celebrated collections that are soon to be retired, including the multigenerational conversation between South African artists and writers in Lerato Shadi & Robin Rhode’s A Protea is Not a Flower and Ghanaian-German artist Zohra Opoku’s exploration of identity, memory, and ancestral lineage in We Proceed in the Footsteps of the Sunlight.
Those who are interested in the building’s award-winning architecture and the journey of the original Grain Silo, all the way from its status as the tallest building in Sub-Saharan Africa in the 1920s to its incorporation into the Zeitz MOCAA as a world-class museum at the tip of the African continent.
The dedicated outdoor food court is perfect for enjoying a snack in between exploring the museum’s many floors, with authentic South African flavours prepared by Makers Landing’s professional chefs and live musical performances from the V&A buskers for an experience that celebrates the spirit of South African heritage.
The event is completely family-friendly, with hands-on workshops designed for all ages. Young adults and teenagers are sure to enjoy the fan-favourite Silo Tote Bag workshop, which invites participants to craft their own personalised bags inspired by Zeitz’s distinctive silos, while younger attendees are encouraged to join the immersive, brand-new Art Patrol experience that questions who safeguards our art and heritage.
The Museum encourages visitors to try the Bloomberg Connects app, which makes it easy to find where each exhibition and Heritage Day activity is taking place by providing access to exhibitions, programming, and a detailed map of the museum’s seven floors – with multilingual functionality ensuring South Africans can learn more about Zeitz in their mother tongue.

How to attend
The event is free to attend, making it one of the most accessible days to experience Zeitz’s world-class art, facilities, and space while participating in engaging, family-friendly activities that connect South Africa’s diverse cultures.
Those who want to avoid queues and experience the Museum year-round can sign up for membership via Webtickets, which offers unlimited access throughout the year, family-friendly engagements, and exclusively curated benefits, starting from R320 per year.
