Brought to you by the creators of the iconic Jade Lounge which so perfectly captured the city’s legendary nightlife era, The Alex is fast becoming known for its expertly crafted cocktails, eclectic interiors, and world-class music lineup.
Behind the heavily carved door lies curated chill spaces that come perfect for drinks after you’ve tried the top restaurants on Bree Street. Outdoor balcony seating will give you a front-seat view of the lively buzz on Strand Street while soaking up the evening air, but if you’re seeking more discretion, head indoors.
There are two uniquely designed bar spaces and a dimly lit lounge decorated in a playful but grown-up design aesthetic with elements of bold colours, sphere motifs, and wood accents. The building was an empty shell when the team took over, and they’ve worked hard to balance its heritage features with all the modern makings of a relaxed cocktail lounge. The main bar’s tranquil, Japanese-inspired dark wood interiors can offer patrons respite from the ever-bustling surrounds.
Mixologist Tristan Jacobs, who cut his teeth at one of Cape Town’s top bar institutions, takes classic cocktails and flips them into something slicker than the average. Expect top-tier spirits, fresh, unexpected ingredients, and a dash of creativity on the short cocktail list.
The inventive spirit of the bar team is on full show, and they can pretty much whip up anything you fancy. We tried an experimental wine-based cocktail on our visit which got everyone’s seal of approval. Whisky lovers can savour highball sips from the most popular labels, and Cape wines and independent beers are also available. A food and snack menu is currently in the works and will be unveiled soon.
The Listening Club, live music in Cape Town every Friday
Ease into the weekend at The Alex with The Listening Club, the cocktail bar’s live music event running every Friday from 6pm to 8pm. A local band sets the mood with a live performance throughout the evening. The music programme changes weekly and different talents headline the event. Expertly selected DJ sets round out the rest of the night.
While you’re there, try the complimentary wine tasting hosted by an expert sommelier. The wine labels too rotate each week to introduce and spotlight underrated wineries.
