Nonhlanhla Yende is an advocate for the power of the performing arts and is passionate about using performance as a tool to nurture and develop local talent. She wants to see an end to the struggles singers face both locally and abroad and believes that artists have an important role to play in the development of South Africa.
A musical tribute to South Africa’s pioneering songstress
Spirituals Evening is hosting a special concert to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Nokutela Mdima-Dube who made a mark in the 19th century as a singer, composer, arranger, teacher, instrumentalist and conductor.
This Women’s Month music event in Cape Town is headlined by Nonhlanhla Yende who performs powerful and spiritual music that was originally composed, arranged and published by Nokutela.
Featured in the programme will be rare songs such as Inhlanhla Kwabashadayo, Izigebengu and Ikhaya Lami published in her 1911 songbook, Amagama Abantu.
The songbook is recorded as the first secular music literature published in an African language in South Africa.
Nonhlanhla Yende – A Musical Tribute To Nokutela Mdima-Dube honours the indomitable spirit of women who work daily to bring positive change in their society and the world. It also serves as a reminder of the extraordinary power women hold.
The venue has limited seating, book now to avoid disappointment. For more info and build-up to the concert, follow Masixole Makwetu Music on Instagram and Facebook.
