Jazzart’s ENCORE: A Must-See Dance Tribute to Local Legends

Jazzart is closing off their 50th anniversary celebration with ENCORE running at the Artscape Theatre on Thursday, 29 February and Friday, 1 March 2024. This captivating new dance production pays homage to the incredible past and current directors, performers, choreographers, and teachers who have contributed to the company’s greatness over half a century.

What to expect with ENCORE

The performances curated for ENCORE showcase some of the most exciting dance talent in the country and feature a wide range of top choreographers, teachers, and directors, past and present.

This mixed-bill dance production is diverse and highly creative, presenting award-winning artists and guest companies, in a tapestry of dance styles and beautiful, colourful costumes.

Some of the performance highlights include a special headline appearance by Alfred Hinkel and John Linden’s Garage Dance Ensemble, choreographed by Byron Klassen and Marlin Zoutman, and numerous alumni from the 90s such as Gregg Adams, Sbonakaliso Ndaba, Lewellyn Afrika, Yaseen Manuel & Keenun Wales.

ENCORE also showcase the works of inimitable ex-Jazzart artistic directors Sifiso Kweyama, and Jackie Manyaapelo as well as spectacular alumni artists Sbonakaliso Ndaba (Sbo Ndaba Dance), Marlin Zoutman & Celeste Botha (New World Dance Theatre), Grant van Ster & Shaun Oelf (Figure Of 8 Dance Collective) and Tanzley Jooste (Baba Yaya African Performing Arts Academy).

Jazzart: A leader in contemporary dance

Jazzart quickly became a leader in contemporary dance in South Africa, after its founding in 1973. The company also provides a vital foundational creative platform for developing artists who have gone on to be game changers in the scene, both at home and abroad. Jazzart has become synonymous with presenting unbelievable dexterity, mesmerising skill, and a unique expression of the breadth and depth of human emotion.
