Mochi Mochi

Cute Japanese Confectionery at Mochi Mochi in Cape Town CBD

Located in Heritage Square, Mochi Mochi is a delightful addition to the Cape Town food scene that brings Japanese culture and expertise with a South African twist.

The team behind Tjing Tjing started Mochi Mochi in 2020 as a pop-up. Together with Spook Design Company, they created a kawaii (cute) brand inspired by iconic Sanrio characters like Gudetama and Aggretsuko. So, you might have seen the cute images and wondered what mochi actually is. Well, mochi is a traditional Japanese squishy-textured dough made from glutinous rice flour often filled with sweet fillings such as red bean paste, custard, or fruit.

Chef Adri Morel’s mochi truffles (called truffles by her due to the smaller than usual size) come in a variety of flavours such as matcha, black sesame, milktart and pink Nesquik. New delicious flavours are being introduced frequently. Customers can choose from individual pieces or opt for a box of mixed flavours.

Other sweet treats include the daifuku doughnut, the more traditional mitirashi dango, a variety of cookies, matcha soft serve with toppings and sweet and savoury milkbread buns.

One of Cape Town’s favourites is the mochi ice cream. The combination of the soft and chewy mochi filled with a scoop of creamy ice cream creates a texture combination that is a taste sensation. Flavours include traditional and familiar tastes such as vanilla, chocolate and green tea

Mochi Mochi also hosts informal tea tastings inspired by Japan’s tea ceremonies to introduce customers to green teas like matcha and other speciality teas. It is worth noting that these events require advance bookings.

The passion, love, and care for the craft are all apparent in the quality of the food, and the welcoming ambience of the shop. The cosy interior provides an inviting atmosphere, for customers to enjoy a treat with friends or indulge in a solo snack.

Whether you’re a fan of Japanese cuisine or simply looking to try something new, Mochi Mochi is an excellent choice for a sweet (or savoury) treat that will surely send you off smiling, if not craving more.
