Artscape Youth Jazz Series 2025

Artscape Youth Jazz Series

First launched in 2003, the Artscape Youth Jazz Series celebrates young jazz musicians and school ensembles by giving them a space to perform and learn.

The project includes Masterclass programmes where the young musicians will learn from those experienced in the industry, and then they will take to the stage across two days: Youth Jazz Soloists showcase their talent on 13 June, and the School Jazz Bands will perform on 14 June.

Devin Gray: How to Get Away with Marriage

Devin Gray is a whip-smart international comedian and comedy writer, who has been working the comedy circuit in Europe, Asia and the UK for over a decade. His solo show, How to Get Away with Marriage, is a fast-paced hour of stand-up that dives headfirst into the chaos of married life, mental health, and modern love. 

After earning a Best Newcomer nomination at the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Gray is bringing his acclaimed solo show to South Africa’s National Arts Festival in Makhanda this June. But before the festival crowds get to see it, Cape Town audiences have the rare chance to catch an exclusive preview.

Jive Cape Town Funny Festival

The Jive Cape Town Funny Festival is South Africa’s oldest and foremost comedy festival, showcasing the best local stand-up comedians together with top international variety acts.

Dalin Oliver and Alan Committee are acting as MCs for the event, and featured comedians include The Big Boys (SA), Charlie Caper (Sweden), Emo & Loukmaan Adams & Terry Fortune (SA), Kagiso Mokgadi (SA), Robby Collins (SA), and Baccala Clown (Italy).

The winner of the Jive Funny Championship will also be crowned – a competition which is open to anyone in Cape Town to enter.

Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

Producers Pieter Toerien and the Luitingh Alexander Musical Theatre Academy (LAMTA) are set to dazzle Cape Town audiences with a thrilling new production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The much-loved musical, created by the legendary duo Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, is bursting with vibrant energy, dazzling choreography, and unforgettable songs. Two Oceans Aquarium After Dark Series

South Africa’s top bands and artists will perform live acoustic sets this winter for the return of Two Oceans Aquarium’s After Dark concert series. This monthly live music event in Cape Town promises an intimate setting and runs in collaboration with Texx and the City. the aquarium plays host, offering unforgettable evenings that bring together the worlds of music and marine life.

The June to September lineup includes Anica Kiana and Faker Streets, Visitors Centre and Carla Franco, Mars Baby and Giuliette Price, and The Dirty Skirts and Wren Hinds Band, all delivering special stripped-down performances.

Cape Town and Joburg Ballet: Swan Lake

In a historic first in nearly 30 years, Cape Town City Ballet and Joburg Ballet are teaming up to present the iconic Swan Lake. First opening in Johannesburg, the production visits Cape Town in late July.

Through this generational collaboration, the Cape Town City Ballet and the Joburg Ballet are bringing Tchaikovsky’s iconic ballet to South Africa. Complete with a live orchestra score, conducted by Brandon Phillips, this performance is one of the most anticipated of the year.

Now on its 15th production, Cape Town’s Most Wanted allows audiences to see the best of Cape Town’s Street dancers, choreographers, and dance crews—from across the City and beyond—in one performance.

This is no competition but a “co-creation” where the whole of Cape Town works together to bring out its best. It is a unique opportunity to experience live and raw, on one stage, in one performance: the unique styles with all genres showing their dynamic diversity, stunning creativity, mind-blowing technique and ultimate swag.

Curl Up and Dye

Curl up & Dye – by Sue Pam-Grant & DJ Grant was first staged in 1989, to huge acclaim in South Africa and Europe. It won a Fringe First at the Edinburgh Festival in 1990. It was written up in the New York Times. The narrative takes place in in a hair salon, in Joubert Park, Johannesburg.

Directed by Darryl Spijkers, this uniquely South African story deals with the end of the apartheid regime and inter-racial relations during that period. Starring Willene Potgieter, Ntombikayise Wonti, Roché Buckle, Ofentse Motlafi and Lilian Bianca Hougaard, this is a production not to be missed.

Messiah

New World Dance Theatre presents “Messiah”, choreographed by South African Marlin Zoutman. A contemporary dance work that investigates the human pursuit of a higher force, needing to have faith in something greater.

Messiah recounts the narrative of individuals’ excursions through hard and tempting times. In a period of weakness, our spirits are lost in the chase for answers. We can’t make it in isolation and need a saviour—the extraordinary outing of individuals overcoming their devils.

Marc Eugene Lottering

Comedy veteran, Marc Lottering presents his wildly successful new comedy special for two evening shows at Nassau Theatre.

In his latest show, the comedian hilariously dissects ideas around family and origin by sharing his findings about his very colourful family tree. This critically acclaimed show has already enjoyed a sell-out season in Joburg and Cape Town, with many fans claiming that this is the best Lottering offering yet.

Lottering is one of South Africa’s top comedians, having written 20 one-man shows and three smash hit musicals. He has also been nominated for and received several prestigious theatre awards along the way, even being inducted into the Comics Choice Hall of Fame.

Cape Town Philharmonic Winter Symphonies

The Cape Town Philharmonic Winter Symphonies concert series consists of three concerts: two of which are conducted by Thomas Sanderling, and the last one by Jeremy Silver.

The 12 June symphony, conducted by Sanderling, is of works by Brahms, with the stunning violinist Andrey Baranov as the soloist in the Violin Concerto. The main work is the Symphony No. 4. Baranov is the winner of the Queen Elisabeth Violin Competition of 2012, the Benjamin Britten and Henri Marteau International Violin Competitions, and a prizewinner of more than twenty other international competitions.

The 19 June symphony, conducted by Sanderling, features two of South Africa’s foremost pianists, Megan-Geoffrey Prins and Tinus Botha, in the Concerto for Two Pianos by Mozart. The concert opens with the overture to Der Entfuehrung aus dem Serail by Mozart and concludes with Beethoven Symphony No 7.

Finally, the 26 June symphony, conducted by Silver, is a concert version of Il Trovatore, Verdi’s masterpiece, with Opera UCT, the CPO Afri-Arts Choir and soloists Nontobeko Bhengu (Leonora) Mkhanyiseli Dyantyi (Manrico), Bongiwe Nakani Mcetywa (Azucena), Theo Magongoma (Conte di Luna) and Monde Masimini (Ferrando).
