Cape Town Opera and famous songwriter, playwright and director David Kramer present a brand new, unique musical, Orpheus McAdoo. Following the success of his musical, ‘Orpheus in Africa’ in 2015, this captivating production combines American spirituals, folk songs, South African minstrel songs, early ragtime and opera.
David Kramer brings the Virginia Jubilee Concert Company to life
In ‘Orpheus McAdoo’, David Kramer unveils the true story of The Virginia Jubilee Concert Company, an African-American choir led by Orpheus McAdoo (Conroy Scott).
Their journey to South Africa in the 1890s, at the invitation of Lady Loch (Natalie Robbie), the Governor’s wife, marked the introduction of a unique singing style to the Cape, sparking an overnight sensation and a two-year countrywide tour. The musical recreates how his choir sang the old spirituals over 120 years ago, along with other styles and South African elements.
