This weekend, The Mission for Inner City Cape Town is hosting public activations across the CBD to get Capetonians out of their beds and engaging with their community.
To end off the month, select spaces from Thibault Square to Bree Street are open to everyone as they platform various initiatives, local businesses, and professional artists. The series of interconnected public activations includes food vendors, live music, heritage tours, clothing brands, and many activities open to all.
The programme forms part of the Mission’s broader placemaking efforts aimed at creating a more vibrant, walkable and people-focused inner city.

Friday, 29 May
To kick off the weekend-long set of activities and experiences, Street Feast brings together local food vendors, live music, and a midday activation in the heart of the CBD.
Sticky Lips, the trendy food truck known for bold Asian fusion flavours, is among the confirmed food providers, alongside wood-fired pizzas from Ishushu, and beloved smash burgers from Herenity. At the same time, the Jason Marshall Quartet sets the tone with live jazz in the middle of the square, so everyone can enjoy their meals while grooving to proudly South African sounds.

Saturday, 30 May
The event continues with the introduction of the Open Ateliers programme, which gives people a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of local creatives, studios, and cultural spaces. The list includes ceramics from HAN, jewellery from Anna Rosholt, clothing from METRO= HANDMADE, artists from Lemkus Gallery, and many more.
Also on Saturday, renowned guide Cameron Peters leads a free walking tour exploring the history of the Mother City’s most beloved creatives, artists, and makers who operated in the inner city. The two-hour tour starts at 10am from outside the Cape Heritage Hotel on Bree Street.

Sunday, 31 May
Concluding the festivities is the return of Bree Street Sundays, where the busy district in the CBD is transformed into a car-free, people-first space filled with activities, markets, and community. During the day, Bree Street’s beloved restaurants take to the streets to offer visitors culinary experiences as they walk, sit, garden, and spend time together.
Additionally, many eco-focused activities and urban gardening activations are scheduled for the afternoon, led by the Mission’s cross-disciplinary creative director. More events and details are set to be released throughout the week.
Need to know
The Mission for Inner City Cape Town is looking to change the stigma that the CBD is only for travelling through on the way to work, and instead frame it as the forefront of the city’s cultural, economic, and social identity. They believe that consistent activation of public spaces reshapes how people see the district and, in so doing, connects the city’s people and businesses into one community.
