Cape Town City Ballet’s A Christmas Carol is a magical and grand production by South African veteran choreographer Veronica Paeper that remains faithful to the 19th-century novel. This Charles Dickens classic is a festive favourite and tells the story of mean-spirited Scrooge and his road to redemption. A Christmas Carol runs at Artscape Theatre from 8 to 29 December.
A charming ballet rendition of A Christmas Carol
Cape Town City Ballet is adding a fresh Christmas tradition to the festive entertainment calendar this year with a ballet production based on Charles Dickens’ cherished story.
On Christmas Eve, Ebenezer Scrooge is an unpleasant, elderly man who is paid a visit by the Ghost of his dead business partner to tell him that three Spirits will call on him. The Spirit of Christmas Past, The Spirit of Christmas Present and the Spirit of Christmas Future. Each ghost takes Scrooge on a journey through time, showing him scenes from his past, the present, and a possible future if he continues on his current path of greed and cruelty. After their visits, Scrooge is transformed into a kinder and gentler man.
In this timeless classic story of the victory of the human spirit over greed, celebrate the joyfulness of youth talent and the magic of the festive season.
Marcel Meyer takes the lead as Scrooge in this ballet production in Cape Town, while Cape Town City Ballet selected a cast of 60 children to showcase the magic of appearing on stage with a professional ballet company and discovering the passion that makes the dance magical.
