VUUR scores big at the World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants

The daring fire-cooking steakhouse hidden in Stellenbosch’s food scene just secured the 87th spot on the “World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants” list. This is one of only two African restaurants on the list, leading ahead of The Blockman in Johannesburg.

This global acclaim comes just 15 months after VUUR opened. It follows another major achievement—earning its first star at the prestigious Eat Out Awards. Owner and head chef, Shaun Scrooby, has crafted a bold, sustainable menu rooted in ancient cooking traditions while transforming fire-cooking into an art.

“Fire cooking isn’t just a trend, it’s a return to something visceral and real,” says Shaun. “We’re humbled and energised by this recognition, and proud to bring a uniquely South African fire experience to the global stage.”

VUUR’s global recognition not only spotlights Cape Town as a serious food city but showcases the country’s ability to compete – and win – on the world stage. In a list dominated by the likes of Argentina, Spain, and the United States, VUUR’s inclusion at #87 is a triumph for African culinary excellence.

What’s on the menu

VUUR began in April 2022, sparked by a deep passion for cooking with fire. From the start, each meal was a story—told through warm service, carefully chosen wines, and flame-kissed dishes that felt both rustic and refined.

Chef Shaun and his team have explored a wide range of open-flame techniques, weaving them into a carefully curated seven-course menu. Each dish is paired with wines from Remhoogte Wine Estate, creating a seasonal, ever-changing journey through flavour. Expect beautifully prepared vegetables, locally sourced meat, fresh fish and seafood—all crafted to excite the palate.

The restaurant is tucked away at Remhoogte Wine Estate across a dam, on a small island called Goose Island by two brothers who played there as boys.

At the core is a 16-seat Chef’s Table, where open-fire cooking takes centre stage. For a closer look, the Chef’s Counter seats two.

The standard tasting menu includes two snacks, two starters, two mains and a dessert. Each course comes with a perfectly matched wine, priced at R2,450 per person.

For something extra special, the Heritage Menu introduces refined versions of selected dishes alongside a vintage wine flight from Remhoogte. This experience costs R3,450 per person.

And for the true culinary adventurers, there’s the Menu du Chef. This extended experience highlights the finest ingredients, cooked over fire and paired with Shaun’s personal wine collection. It’s bold, generous, and deeply personal. At R5,500 per person, it’s a slow, luxurious journey—so clear your calendar for the day.
