Cape Town has a generous side, and your birthday is the perfect time to take advantage of it. From the summit of Table Mountain to the Atlantic Seaboard and the Cape Town City Bowl, a handful of well-known attractions offer complimentary or heavily discounted experiences to those who know to ask.
Most of these deals are available to South African citizens only and require valid ID, so keep your smart card or driver’s licence handy. Table Mountain Cableway Birthday
South African citizens can collect a complimentary return trip on the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway on any day during their birthday month. The ticket must be redeemed in person at the Lower or Upper Station ticket office, with valid South African ID, a driver’s licence, or birth certificate as proof. It cannot be booked online or collected in advance.
The rotating cable car has operated since 1929 and transports visitors 1,086 metres above sea level to the summit of Table Mountain, one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. Standard adult return tickets are ordinarily priced from R420. A Fast Track upgrade is available at a reduced rate for birthday ticket holders, purchasable only at the ticket offices. Two Oceans Aquarium Birthday
South African citizens and permanent residents aged 4 and older can visit the Two Oceans Aquarium free of charge on any day during their birthday month. Admission for children under 4 is already free year-round. The ticket must be collected in person from the onsite ticket office on the day of the visit; it cannot be pre-booked or collected by a third party.
Adults must present photo ID showing a South African ID number. Children under 18 may use a birth certificate, medical aid card, or clinic card. The aquarium, situated on the V&A Waterfront, houses over 3,000 animals across exhibits featuring sharks, penguins, sea turtles, kelp forests, and jellyfish. The birthday offer does not extend to paid experiences such as diving or the Penguin Experience.

City Sightseeing Young Explorers Club
The City Sightseeing Young Explorers Club is a free membership programme for children aged 4 to 17. Each year, members receive two complimentary one-day Classic Hop-on Hop-off bus tickets; one for the member and one for a friend of the same age group. Vouchers are valid for four weeks: one week before the birthday and three weeks after.
Registration must be completed online at least two weeks before the birthday. Only one child may be registered per email address, and parental or guardian consent is required. On the day of travel, members also receive a free 16-page activity magazine with puzzles, crosswords, and selected discounts, collectable at Stop 1 or Stop 5. The Galileo Open Air Cinema screens classic films, blockbusters, and family favourites at scenic venues across Cape Town and the Cape Winelands from October to May each year. South African citizens with a birthday during the season can attend one show for free during their birthday month, with the complimentary ticket covering general admission, a backrest, and a blanket.
Tickets must be booked in advance via Webtickets, as availability is limited per show. Valid South African ID is required at the venue. The offer excludes special screenings such as Halloween, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Valentine’s Day shows. The fleet includes Dutch-style single-speed cruiser bikes with sprung saddles, tandems, children’s bikes, child seats for toddlers under 18kg, and carriages for two small children. Helmets and locks are included at no charge. The drop-and-go model means bikes can be returned to any Up station rather than the original rental point. Sky-Hi Ride Birthday Special
The Sky-Hi Ride at Hotel Sky is a vertical free-fall tower on the 28th floor, 146 metres above the Cape Town City Bowl. South African citizens can book a birthday rider ticket at 50% off the standard R200 price during their birthday month, using their ID number for verification via Webtickets.
The ride lifts passengers 35 metres above the 28th floor before releasing them in an unannounced free fall reaching speeds of up to 100km/h and nearly 4G of force. A video of the experience is included in the ticket price. The ride is one of only three of its kind in the world and the first in Africa. It is weather-dependent and does not operate in high winds, rain, or heavy mist. Riders must be aged 8 to 65 and between 1.3m and 1.85m tall. Bookings are essential via Webtickets.

Housed in a converted grain silo at the V&A Waterfront’s Silo District, Zeitz MOCAA is the largest museum dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora, with over 100 galleries across nine floors. The Cape Wheel stands 40 metres above the Waterfront and completes a slow rotation, offering views of Table Mountain, Signal Hill, Robben Island, and the harbour. Robben Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located in Table Bay approximately 12km from Cape Town. The tour includes a ferry crossing of around 30 minutes, a guided bus tour of the island, and time at the former maximum-security prison, where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years of imprisonment. Tours are weather and sea-condition dependent and run at 9am, 11am, 1pm and 3pm daily.

Cool Runnings Birthday Ride
Cool Runnings, Africa’s first downhill tobogganing track, offers South African citizens one complimentary ride during their birthday month. A physical South African ID book or Smart ID card is required; driver’s licences, photographs of ID, and medical cards are not accepted. The free ride is valid on the day of issue only.
The 1.25km steel track runs at the foot of the Durbanville hills and takes riders through 17 corners, S-bends, and a tunnel in a wheeled bobsled. An automatic pulley system hauls riders to the top, removing the need to climb. Children under eight must be accompanied by an adult, and riders must be at least three years old. Standard single-ride tickets start from R100, with multi-ride packs and day passes available. The park also has a licensed bar and café on site. Parking and entry are free of charge. The guided 60-minute experience departs from the Silo District at the V&A Waterfront and travels by road through the precinct before transitioning into the harbour near Cape Grace.
