Women for Change: National Shutdown

Exactly one year after gender-based violence and femicide were declared a ‘national disaster’ and the women’s shutdown of the G20, non-profit organisation Women for Change is once again asking South Africans to spend 21 November raising awareness for the victims of GBVF and calling for more action to be taken by influential institutions.

Even after a million signatures forced the government to acknowledge the severity of the epidemic, the recent wave of highly publicised murders and sexual assaults has highlighted the lack of drastic action taken by the government.

Women for Change has released the following as their official list of demands:

“By 21 November 2026, the Presidency must publish a fully costed, time-bound GBVF National Disaster implementation plan with a dedicated, transparent budget and appoint a national leader responsible for coordinating implementation and ensuring accountability across government departments. The plan must include immediate protection measures, measurable 12-month targets, complete annual femicide and child murder statistics for 2024/25 and 2025/26, long-term commitments through 2030, clearly assigned institutional responsibilities, and quarterly public progress reporting with independent oversight.“

Take A Step Against GBV

Smile FM hosts a 5km walk, asking Capetonians to take a stand against gender-based violence in South Africa.

Participants can choose to partake in an individual walk or a family walk, which allows prams and children under 12 to participate. The annual event also features a family-filled morning of entertainment, with acts to be announced before the event begins. The event also includes a designated children’s area for kids under 12, a picnic area where participants can bring and set up their own picnics, and a variety of food trucks.

After weeks of increased scrutiny on the government following several cases of GBV, Take A Step enables participants to meaningfully contribute to the welfare of survivors, as proceeds from the event go in support of local organisations and care facilities working to end gender-based violence.

Cost: R100 per person | R50 (kids). Book now on the website.

When: 29 November 2026 | 8am – 11am
Where: Ratanga Park, 4 Conference Ln, Century City, Cape Town

Run 4 Her

“As one of Cape Town’s women-only running communities, it is with heavy hearts that we have decided to dedicate this Saturday’s run to the memory of our sister, Elizabeth. 🕊️

Elizabeth’s story is a devastating reminder of the reality so many women face, and it has deeply shaken our running community and beyond.

This is not a trend.
This is not content.
This is not a moment to seek attention.

This is about a life.
A sister.
A daughter.
A family.
A woman whose life mattered.

We run this Saturday in her memory, in solidarity with her loved ones, and for every woman who deserves to feel safe while running, walking, going home, or simply living her life.

May Elizabeth never be reduced to a headline.

We remember her. We honour her. We stand together.”

When: 19 September 2026 | From 7.30am
Where: Table Bay Mall

Run For Her

“She went out for a run. She should have come home.

This week’s Crew Run is dedicated to remembering the women whose lives have been taken by femicide.

Femicide is an ongoing crisis in South Africa. Awareness alone is not enough. Ending it requires all of us to recognise the violence women face, challenge what allows it to continue and refuse to accept it as normal.

We run to remember those we have lost, to stand in solidarity with women and to recognise that what we do after this run matters too.“

Wear black. Take a purple ribbon. Run for HER✊.”

More information via Instagram.

When: 16 September 2026 | From 6pm
Where: SportSA Paarl

We have one wonderful sista willing to host us around the Common, but we’d love a few more neighbourhood hosts. If you’re from the Rondebosch area and can help out, please send us a message.”

When: Wednesday, 30 September 2026 | From 8pm

Endure Collective

“We see how so many people are showing up, sharing and engaging with this very important topic. We are creating that space as well.

FOR HER, WE RUN

A run in solidarity against gender-based violence and femicide.

On Sunday, 4 October 2026, we’ll be gathering in Blouberg for a run/walk in support of ending GBV&F. Afterwards, we’ll meet on the beach for a one-minute silence, followed by an opportunity to reflect and share in an open, safe space for meaningful conversation.

This is not a fundraiser, and nothing is for profit. It is simply a community-led initiative to create awareness, honour the women who never came home, and hold space around an issue that affects all of us.

We’re being mindful that this should never feel like brand promotion, but rather collective support around an issue that affects us all.

Everyone is welcome. You can run, walk, show up quietly, or simply stand in solidarity.”

When: Sunday, 4 October 2026 | From 7am
Where: Eden on the Bay, Blouberg, Cape Town

We Run Without Fear

“We run because every woman deserves to move freely, safely, and without fear, day or night.

Join @runitstylish @marindeklerk @donnyduckie as we #RunForOurLives, a 24-hour non-stop awareness run around Rondebosch Common to take a stand against gender-based violence. Whether you run or walk, come for one loop or stay for hours, your presence makes a difference.”

When: Friday & Saturday, 25 & 26 September 2026 | 7pm – 7pm
Where: Rondebosch Common

Vitality SA

“Calling runners and walkers everywhere, let’s run in pink for Elizabeth ‘Tsontso’ Moselakgomo.

Join us this week as we paint the roads pink for Tsontso, our Team Vitality member who was taken from us too soon.

Let’s honour her life on:

📅 Thursday and Saturday at a Team Vitality Zone near you

📅 Saturday morning at a parkrun near you

🏃‍♀️ Or any other group run happening in your area.

If you would like to support Tsontso’s family and contribute towards the long-term financial security of her daughter, you will soon be able to donate your Điscovery Miles through a Team Vitality donation campaign. We will share more details in the coming days.”
