Africa’s premier opera company has announced plans for two brand-new initiatives: the Judith Neilson Theatre Development Centre and the Cape Town Opera Academy. Together, these programmes look to advance the future of performing arts in the Mother City by giving young artists more opportunities to develop their talents.

More about Cape Town Opera’s new plans
Remodelling is set to start in 2028, with the Old Mill House opposite the Castle of Good Hope being transformed into a multi-purpose production centre. Plans include a new theatre, specialist wardrobe facilities, and dedicated set-construction workshops. Rather than only supporting the local performing arts sector, these services will be available to the broader film, television, events, and creative industries.
The Cape Town Opera Academy will take in talented participants and teach them artistic and technical skills while gaining hands-on experience in an active production company. By learning from professionals in structured internships and other specialised programmes, students can more easily bridge the gap between learning and performing.
More than just what audiences see on stage, the Academy looks to develop the technicians that bring a work to life behind the scenes; skills that can travel across disciplines, from musical theatre to film, television, and festivals. With the practical experience outlined earlier, this approach helps Cape Town’s young creatives address the current youth unemployment crisis.
Funded in part by the Judith Neilson Foundation, the Academy is looking to partner with like-minded organisations to co-ordinate development strategies and create a more comprehensive education ecosystem. Together, the Centre and Academy strengthen the sustainability of South Africa’s theatre industry, creating a transparent pipeline for young professionals to develop, be seen, and build their careers.

Keep up to date with new developments
The main Cape Town Opera productions will remain at the Artscape Theatre Centre, while the expanded training programmes are hosted at the new Theatre Development Centre. Further details will be announced in the coming months.
