Southern Sun The Cullinan

A Luxury Sunday Lunch Series with Classic Carvery Favourites at Southern Sun The Cullinan

There’s something particularly nostalgic about a classic and delicious Sunday lunch in Cape Town, especially the one at Southern Sun The Cullinan in the CBD. In contrast to the city’s endless stream of trendy restaurants, Sunday lunches call for an entirely different set of standards. A relaxed atmosphere where you can unwind with family and loved ones, homely comfort food without all the theatrics, and a great location to walk off all the great food and wine.

Peach Tree restaurant at Southern Sun The Cullinan is somewhat of a hidden gem and has the art of the ideal lazy lunch down to a T. Their Luxury Sunday Lunch is a five-course buffet feast with table service on every First and Last Sunday of the month.

You’re greeted with gentle, jazzy live tunes that set a chilled mood.  Kick back in the dining room with a sophisticated and grown-up feel where dark leather, rich velvets, and natural sunlight washing in dominate the mood.

Southern Sun The Cullinan

A Sunday feast where familiar lunch faves get a decadent update

Executive Chef Byron du Bois’ dishes incorporate a melting pot of cultures including authentic Cape Malay cuisine, Asian-style stir-fries, homely carvery faves, and a cute selection of desserts.  Start with a light soup that makes the best use of seasonal produce to come away from the cold, followed by a DIY starter experience at the salad bar with fresh greens and grains, Cape cheeses, and preserves.

A fish course is presented family-style, at your table, followed by the main course from where the chef’s team is on standby to guide you through their large spread of legendary Sunday roast. Make your own Seven Colours platter with the assortment of vegetables and sides prepared with an elevated Sunday roast approach where roast beef, grilled chicken and tender braised lamb shank or beef brisket take centre stage.

It’s worth saving room for dessert. Pastry Chef Wandile Shange pulls out all the stops for his buffet selection of gorgeous confectionaries, cakes and other sugar crafts in a rainbow of colours. There’s no time for minimalism here. Tuck into dainty Swiss rolls, endless mousse options (there’s chocolate, strawberry, mint, and granadilla!), macarons galore, mini cheesecakes and tiramisu, and much more.

Purists looking for something sweet and straightforward will love the custard and syrupy malva pudding and choice of baked cakes. Pair it with a pot of tea or freshly brewed coffee and you’re good to go.

When you’re done, consider a short walk and cross the bridge to the quiet canal-side lane at V&A Waterfront, mere minutes away.
