Spier Food Garden hosts regular self harvesting experiences that are open to the entire family. The gardening team under the guidance of Megan McCarthy has transformed an old horse paddock into a thriving food garden where delicious and nutrient-rich produce takes centre stage.
More about Spier Food Garden
The Spier Food Garden team strictly employ eco-friendly and regenerative techniques to grow fruits, herbs, salad greens and vegetables harvested from this serene space. Produce from the garden is used at the wine farm’s restaurants and for dishes at the Picnickery kitchen.
No inorganic pesticides or artificial fertilisers are used in the food garden. Instead, much effort is spent ensuring the soil is healthy so that the plants have a robust immune system to withstand attacks by pests. Worm compost and weekly foliar sprays (a natural form of fertiliser) boost nutrients. Alien vegetation removed from other parts of the farm has been chipped and turned into compost; this has helped ensure the food garden’s soil is now rich in microbial activity.
When it comes to taking care of unwelcome insects, Megan gets help from a paddle of 16 Indian Runner ducks who roam freely through the garden during the day and snack on snails and slugs. The ducks sleep in mobile enclosures at night.
Pick your own seasonal fruit, vegetables, and herbs in Stellenbosch
The Spier Food Garden is open daily to visitors from 9am to sunset. You can meander through it at your own pace, exploring the seasonal bounty. Friendly gardeners are always happy to share their insights.
Guests can also take along a basket or box, and harvest their own vegetables, fruit and herbs. This guided experience takes you through various parts and greenhouses in the space. Choose between fresh lettuce, radishes and other greens for salads, taste organic onions, and go home with seasonal berries and granadillas for organically driven recipes at home.
