LUXURY ACCOMMODATION MEETS UNIQUE FARM STAY
South Hill Vineyards offers three luxury accommodation options – The Villa, The Pumphouse Honeymoon Cottage and the House Boat.
We recently had the pleasure of staying at the Pumphouse Honeymoon Cottage, which is a great option for a couple’s retreat, a solo escape, or a much-needed break with a friend.
The cottage is situated in the old farm pumphouse, beautifully renovated to include a lounge area with a fireplace and large windows overlooking a small pier etching over the farm damn.
The compact but fully equipped kitchenette separates the bedroom with glass doors leading to a unique outdoor shower that gets the best view of the sunset. The private courtyard has a wood-fired hot tub, hammock and braai facilities.
The Villa is the main house on the farm and is designed with relaxation and socialising in mind, featuring plush lounge seating and an entertainment system that invites you to unwind and enjoy your favourite shows.
With six king-size en-suite rooms, this is an ideal setting for gatherings of friends and family. For those traveling with children, four additional children’s beds can be arranged. The outdoor entertainment space of the Villa is a paradise for those seeking both relaxation and recreation. Featuring a pool, well-equipped braai and pizza oven, expansive lawns and a boule court offers an amazing group getaway.
Definitely one of the most unique accommodation offerings in the Cape is South Hill Vineyards’ Houseboat.
An original Langebaan Houseboat newly restored in chic Scandi-style, this off-grid, comfortable houseboat is perfect for a water-based family holiday, getaway with friends or relaxing, romantic retreat. It is permanently moored on the banks of the farm’s largest dam.
The Houseboat has a 5Kw inverter solar system with battery backup power, an on-land braai facility and a dining area with a rooftop sun deck.
TUCK INTO A COUNTRY-STYLE FEAST
South Hill is the kind of place you can feel comfortable coming with a group of friends or the entire family for long, lazy breakfasts and lunches with lashings of their delicious cool climate award-winning wines.
The restaurant captures you as you step in. The walls are aligned with an eclectic collection of contemporary South African art. From paintings of all sizes and colours to breathtaking sculptures and ceramics, the artworks represent established and emerging artists.
The restaurant offers a country-style menu with hearty dishes such as oxtail stew, chicken and prawn curry and salmon trout. They also offer a variety of tapas and starters, a kids menu and small but delicious dessert menu. We recommend starting your lunch or dinner with smoked snoek pate served with homemade bread, biltong butter and homemade apricot jam.
Apart from the menu, they offer a range of special dishes that change every day. We tried the chicken pot pies served with salad and roast veggies.
YOUR NEW FAVOURITE SUMMERTIME WINES
South Hill Vineyards produces quality-driven, accessible, unpretentious drinking wines of good value. Their Kevin King range of expressive wines complements food pairings and their reserve King of the Hill range is made in small quantities of selected stand-out vintages.
The wines benefit from high fruit flavour development, take advantage of the natural fresh acidity and with as little cellar intervention as possible, ensure they retain a natural balance whilst maintaining the integrity of the Elgin cool climate terroir.
South Hill offers a wine-tasting experience from Wednesday to Sunday from 8am to 4pm. Start the tasting with South Hill Sauvignon Blanc 2022, a ripe and tropical wine with aromas of pear and passion fruit. Followed by the South Hill Dry Rosé 202, a fresh, dry and vibrant salmon-coloured Rosé made with juicy Shiraz grapes. We highly recommend the dry rose as an easy-drinking wine that’s perfect for the summer.
The tasting then veers into the reds with South Hill Pinot Noir 2020 with delicious aromas of red cherry, raspberry and earthy notes typical of Pinot Noir. The South Hill Syrah 2019
Is next and is a beautifully balanced Syrah with a ripe fruit forward nose of typical Syrah spiciness, subtle oak and clean, fresh berry fruits. The tasting ends with the South Hill Cabernet Sauvignon 2019. The wine has bright, fresh aromas of mulberry and black cherry together with subtle hints of vanilla.
