Painter Zarah Cassim has a new body of work on show at The President Hotel in Bantry Bay, hung in the hotel's halls and corridors as the latest edition of In Residence. The series is a collaboration between the hotel and creative non-profit Art School Africa, and aims to bring art out of galleries and into everyday spaces.
Cassim is a graduate of UCT's Michaelis School of Fine Art and has exhibited across South Africa and internationally, including in Spain, France and Australia. Her oil paintings explore how places stay in memory as their details fade, producing landscapes that read as the idea of a place rather than a record of it.
The centrepiece is The Dance I, a large work in reds, purples and yellows. Smaller pieces include Sherbet, Berry and Bleed, on both canvas and Fabriano paper, which show how her practice has developed. Cassim describes her brushwork as instinctive and tied to her state of mind, moving between bold, loose passages and more detailed ones.
