Event information
Winelands Light Railway is a family-friendly miniature railway park on the R304 in Koelenhof, Stellenbosch, which opened in December 2019. Guests board at Park Station for a scenic seven-minute ride along a 760m track, pulled by the electric trains Dozer and Fritz from 9am to 4:15pm. On weekends the steam train joins them, but it doesn’t run in wet weather and pauses for lunch and for the workshop tours.
The tours, at 11am and 2pm, take visitors behind the scenes to see where the trains are made and how they work. Families can bring a picnic to the shaded lawns, though not alcohol, braais or heating equipment, and a kiosk sells coffee, popcorn and ice cream. Well-socialised dogs on leashes are welcome and may ride free.
The park also hosts children’s birthday parties, gender reveals with coloured smoke from the steam train, baby showers and weekday school outings, and offers a Steam Driver Experience on days when it’s closed to the public. Closed on 25 December and 1 January.
