This record shop and vintage store operates across three locations on Lower Main Road, established in 2013 by Fred Spider Jacquier. Voted multiple times as the best record shop in South Africa, the business began with 1,200 Euros and has expanded from an initial 60-square-metre space to a 200-square-metre operation.
Jacquier, a dedicated record collector since 1975, is also a DJ active since 1983, music producer and artistic director who has performed internationally alongside Gilles Peterson, Jazzanova, DJ Koze, Bob Sinclar, Rainer Truby, Mr Scruff, Dimitri from Paris, Daft Punk, Massive Attack, Nicola Conte and Quantic.
The main record shop at number 17 offers vinyl LPs, 12-inch maxis, 7-inch singles and EPs, CDs, cassettes and classic shellac records. The collection specialises in South African music including bubble-gum, South African jazz, funk, kwaito, zulu disco and shangaan, with strong sales of labels including Matsuli, Afrosynth Records and Roastin' Records. International genres include jazz, soul, blues, funk, reggae, punk, house, hip-hop, disco, drum and bass, new-wave, surf, 1960s and 1980s pop and rock, world music, Afrobeat, psychedelic and 1970s rarities. Notable customers have included Brad Pitt, Bonobo, Coldcut, Danny Krivit, Mr Scruff, Guts, Antal, Nightmares on Wax, Simbad, Scratch Bastid and Ohmegawatts.
Numbers 15 and 61 house Voom Voom Vintage and Voom Voom Too, offering vintage clothing, accessories, books and bric-a-brac from the 1950s through 1990s. The shop also stocks secondhand audio equipment including amplifiers, turntables and speakers.
Voom Voom Records operates as both a retail shop and record label, having released Chakalaka Jazz through Heavenly Sweetness with a second volume planned for April 2026. The shop hosted a live Gilles Peterson Worldwide radio show presented by Simbad.
