Saxophonist Josie McClure and accordionist Kaat Vanhaverbeke, known together as NorthSouth Duo, bring their concert programme To Moer and Gone to Stellenbosch as part of the Endler Concert Series. The pair met as postgraduate students at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague and built the project around a shared experience of displacement.
McClure grew up in South Africa and holds two master's degrees in classical saxophone performance, while Vanhaverbeke, originally from Belgium, works across contemporary classical music and sound art. Visa regulations later separated the pair geographically, prompting a body of work built around distance and connection.
The programme moves between Béla Bartók's Romanian Folk Dances, Pedro Iturralde's Suite Hellénique and a new Polish work by Mikołaj Majkusiak, alongside commissions by South African composers Mattijs Van Dijk, Jeremy Hart and Erin Potgieter. Van Dijk's piece incorporates the uhadi, a traditional Xhosa instrument, alongside double bass and percussion. Libyan-born poet Sarah Uheida, shortlisted for the 2025 Ingrid Jonker Prize, contributes a spoken-word piece on displacement.
