Event information
This Ethiopian restaurant serves traditional cuisine in a quirky, object-filled house atmosphere.
The small establishment specialises in vegetable dishes or combinations of vegetables and meat including lamb and chicken, all served on injera, the soft spongy Ethiopian bread that functions as both plate and utensil. The vegetable sampler is a popular choice, featuring curried chickpeas, carrots and spinach. Meat options include tibs and gored gored. Dishes such as gomen, shiro wot and atkilt with misir showcase Ethiopian vegetarian cuisine, and a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony is available.
The restaurant relocated from Long Street to its current Observatory location in a building that previously housed a pub. The interior is stuffed with vintage African masks and sculptures, many of which are also available for purchase. The eclectic decor creates a distinctive atmosphere enhanced by classic jazz and blues music from artists such as Big Mama Thornton and Louis Armstrong playing during meals.
The cafe holds only a few tables, each with a distinct character, making for an intimate dining experience. Outside seating includes cozy chairs on a terrace.
Street parking is available on Lower Main Road and Norfolk, though it can be busy.
