Event information
The Tikvat Israel Synagogue - the first synagogue in South Africa - was established by the Cape Town Hebrew Congregation in 1849.
Built in the Neo-classical 'Egyptian' style, the old synagogue building today houses the Museum of the History of the Jewish People in South Africa, and contains an exhibition of Jewish ceremonial art. Next to the Tikvat Israel Synagogue stands the rectangular building of the Great Synagogue, inaugurated in 1905.
