Event information
Cape Town G&S presents a new production of The Pirates of Penzance, one of the most widely performed works in the Gilbert and Sullivan canon.
First staged in 1879, the comic opera follows young Frederic, apprenticed to a hapless band of pirates until his 21st birthday, and the chaos that ensues when love, duty, and an unusual loophole in his indenture collide. The show is noted for its rapid-fire wordplay, comic characters and memorable songs, including the patter song "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General".
Directed by Darryl J Spijkers, with musical direction by Alastair Cockburn, who has served as musical director of the Cape Town G&S Society since 1975, the production features a cast of more than 60 performers and dancers. Live orchestral accompaniment is provided by the newly formed Cape Town Sinfonietta, a 26-piece ensemble performing Arthur Sullivan's score in full from the pit.
Show not for children under 5.
