Event information
The Obs Thrift + Alt Fest is a recurring community market organised by Thrift Fest. The May edition brings together more than 60 stalls spread across indoor and outdoor areas of the community hall, with a mix of second-hand clothing, handmade goods, alternative fashion, art, and accessories. The market operates on a low-barrier entry model, reflecting Observatory's reputation as a centre for independent, community-driven commerce and alternative culture in Cape Town.
Thrift Fest markets have taken place regularly at this venue and others across Cape Town for several years, attracting a broad mix of traders and shoppers drawn to pre-loved, locally made, and alternative goods. The emphasis is on individuality and self-expression rather than mainstream retail, with alternative products particularly encouraged alongside standard second-hand offerings. A playground is available on site for younger visitors.
The event is walk-in on the day; no advance booking is required for visitors. Street parking is available on and around Lower Main Road, with additional customer parking nearby. The Observatory Community Centre is on the MyCiti bus route; the closest stop is on Lower Main Road.
