The Camissa Museum

Event information

The Camissa Museum aims to bring to light narratives that have been overlooked and misrepresented for centuries.

Visitors to the museum can learn about the complex and rich history of these communities, which have been hidden and suppressed for generations. It serves as a place of remembrance and restoration, uncovering a forgotten ancestral and cultural heritage that communities need to understand in order to find common ground with others.

The museum also educates about the history and origins of these communities, fostering a deeper sense of belonging and connection to their roots. It takes visitors on a journey through the emergence and progress of Camissa Africans from 1600 to the present, tracing the experiences of people from over 195 different origins who were brought together through forced migrations. Despite facing great adversity, these communities thrived.

Situated in the historic Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town, the museum is part of a broader effort to transform and restore the memory of this significant landmark.
