Event information
From the visionaries at Studio Ghibli, who brought animation classics such as 'Spirited Away' (2001), 'Howl's Moving Castle' (2004) and 'Princess Mononoke' (1997) to adoring audiences, comes their latest Academy Award-winning film, 'The Boy and the Heron' (2023).
Directed by the incomparable Japanese animation legend, Hayao Miyazaki, 'The Boy and the Heron' is a fantasy adventure that follows a young boy by the name of Mahito. After losing his mother during the war, young Mahito moves to his family’s estate in the countryside. There, a series of mysterious events lead him to a secluded and ancient tower, home to a mischievous gray heron who leads him into a fantastic world shared by the living and the dead.
As he embarks on an epic journey with the heron as his guide, Mahito must uncover the secrets of this world, and the truth about himself. Though originally voiced by Japanese actors, the film's English dub features a star-studded cast with the voices of Christian Bale, Dave Bautista, Gemma Chan, Willem Dafoe, Karen Fukuhara, Mark Hamill, Robert Pattinson and Florence Pugh.
The film opens across South African cinemas, including Numetro, Ster Kinekor, and independent establishments on Friday, 19 April. It is available to be viewed in its original Japanese with English subtitles, or in its English dub depending on the cinema.
