Neues Lied: Swan Songs

Event information

Neues Lied is a festival for art song with a focus on contemporary music founded by Esthea Kruger in Würzburg, Germany in 2018, and established in Cape Town in 2022.

Artist line-up for the Neues Lied festival includes Violina Anguelov-Hobbs( Mezzo-Soprano), Farida Bacharova (Violin), Graham du Plessis (Cello), Minette du Toit-Pearce (Mezzo-Soprano), Silke Evers ( Soprano), Konstantin Ingenpaß (Baritone), Azra Isaacs (Viola), Juliet String Quartet, Esthea Kruger ( Artistic Direction, Piano), Paulina Malefane ( Soprano), and Albie van Schalkwyk (Piano).

The first concert of Neues Lied takes the audience on a profound musical journey with two timeless masterpieces – Schubert’s Schwanengesang and Strauss’ Vier letzte Lieder. The fourteen songs published posthumously as Schubert’s Schwanengesang were written in the composer’s miraculously productive final few months and are exceptionally wide-ranging in emotional content and atmosphere.

Strauss’ sublime Vier letzte Lieder, a poignant contemplation on life and death, are likewise considered the composer’s most significant final statement.

The concert features German baritone Konstantin Ingenpaß, soprano Paulina Malefane, and pianist Esthea Kruger.
